Nutsy on the look out for Scottish Club

I've no idea what I'm supposed to be bitter about. I don't think he's proven himself at all in a situation where he hasn't had substantial resources. Feel free to prove me wrong. Even at Derry, when he did have a decent budget, he didn't exactly cover himself in glory. Added to this, I dislike him because he's an antagonistic, mouthy and irritating little man.

Having an opinion on something doesn't always mean you are 'bitter' and 'bitter' is a phrase that is historically very easy to throw at people from Derry. Basically by branding us all bitter, it allows you to escape discussion on the matter at hand.

Bohs have as good a chance as ever to cause a splash in the CL this year, I'd hate to see this disrupt everything.

Ok, how should we feel towards Fenlon? Just gratified that he ever took the time to come and visit our little hovel? Thrilled that he just about managed to keep us out of the relegation zone? Stupified to even have such a legend in our unworthy little dugout?

Go on, how should we react to the fact that "the best manger in this league by a great distance" took over a club that had lost out on the treble by 8 goals and come within 2 goals of a UEFA Cup group spot and managed us to 3 wins in our first 15 league games of the season?

No arguments about his achievements with money but I don't see how you can say that he has proved himself without money to spend yet. When has he had a job without lots of money to spend? Derry is the only example I can think of and he didn't set the world alight there.

That's very compelling evidence of the accusation of him signing a lot of dross!

To be fair Dave Rogers and Greg O'Halloran were competent with other clubs before and after Derry. Presumably Alan Moore was the most expensive flop?

How would people rate his signings at Bohemians? How many of last years double winning squad were already in place when Fenlon took over, and what were his signings?

isnt it just one of those cases, Derry fans, where things just went wrong, he wasnt suited to life up there, to your club and you lot werent suited to him? Its hard to deny that he's a very good manager - his record speaks for itself.

Stu, I don't deny his managerial record and I know the issue at Derry was a more complex one than, "He's a chequebook manager," I just resent the fact that any time a DCFC fan criticises him we're being 'bitter.'

Exactly. I don't think he's simply a chequebook manager either, but he has had one opportunity where there was at least a semblance of financial restraint shown by the board, and he messed it up. It's too early to judge if he has the ability to develop a young team or to take mediocre players and turn them into a winning team. To say he's the best manager with or without money in the league is obviously ridiculous.

He won a title, in his last season at Shels with players who pretty much hadn't been paid for half the season and while he, himself hadn't been paid for the same period of time. Now you can't tell me any manger can do that?

Either he's a great manager or it tells us something we always knew, Derry are massive bottlers.

No one's denying that but they were very good players that he initially spent a lot of money to attract to Shels. The question whether he can assemble a title winning (or however else you define successful) team without spending lots of money. He hasn't proven that yet.

That says more about his and his players personality rather than his ability to manage without a huge budget.

It's completely hypothetical whether another manager could have kept the expensively assembled Shelbourne team motivated when the cash ran dry, but Fenlon does deserve credit for his part in this.

At Bohemians this years squad has more of his signature on it then last years, and the jury remains out as to how successfull the club, with the largest budget in the league, will be this season.

But if you examine the starting 11 in last years cup final, I think that 8 of these were Sean Connor signings, with only Oman, Byrne and Deegan being Pat Fenlons. (I'm open to correction on this!)

How exactly a team can 'bottle' it in the first half of a season, I have no idea. The concept of bottling is all about losing nerve when the pressure is on at the business end of the season - not the start.

As for your bitterness cliché - how can City fans be bitter about a man that 95% of us were delighted to see the back of ? :confused: Are Bohs fans bitter about Roddy ?

The only signs of bitterness I see are from you and your stiffy with City.

Not true. Our assistant manager is John Carroll (Doolin's assistant at Drogheda). I think Moore was assistant at Rovers at some stage last season - after Scully left? - but for your sake, I really, really hope you're not confusing us with Shamrock Rovers...

Ken Oman was signed just before Fenlon took over.

Before Fenlon took over a lot Derry fans were unhappy with his appointment. I still no idea why Fenlon went up there giving the recent history between Derry and Shels plus Kenny was a tough act to follow. He didn't stand a chance. As soon as things went wrong the fans would turn on him and players would lose confidence. It's all most like LOI's version of The Damned United. It's not bitterness its anger and dislike.

But calling you lot bitter is fun though!:D

If Fenlon does jump ship I can see Bohs being in big trouble, he'd take the best players with him I'd say. Compensation could come in handy for them though.

Thats an interesting spin on the debate....that Fenlon is a better manager then the most vilified in the league!

Personally I would opt for Fenlon over Connor as a manager, but your comment lacks some objectivity.

If the debate is about Fenlons skill to idenitfy and sign players who can win leagues and cups, the point is that the foundation stone for Bohs' double last year was already laid for him (largely by Sean Connor) - the fact that 8 out of the 11 starters in the cup final were already at the club just starkly illustrates that.

Pat Fenlons managerial record is blighted by his resounding failure at Derry. It is inevitable that any discussion about his abilities, strenghts and weaknesses, will feature his unhappy time there. Who better to comment then Derry fans?

Including Roddy Collins who got shown the door after his double winning season in 2001, Bohs have had six managers in the following 6 years through to 2007. I don't think any of them left on "perfect terms" (although Sean Connor might disagree!)

You've learnt a lot from the rat, like how to deflect attention from the issue at hand.

Any bohs fans care to comment on Fenlon issuing a come and get me in the middle of a title defence? And what that means for the club - Do you have any paddles? And just how far up the creek are you? Is he bottling it or running away when things are getting tough, again?

No doubt we'll get the usual seige mentality from Fenlon supporters - nothing wrong here and everyone's out to get us.

Passions run high on the little man it seems.

For the record I'd have Kenny and Fenlon as the two best managers in the league. Streets and streets ahead of the rest.

Things didn't work out for Fenlon at Derry but jesus lads, let it go. Is it really that big a deal that he failed there?

There's nothing to let go ! :confused:

Fenlon was never popular witrh City fans before he came to the club, so our view has remained consistent.

Our dislike of him isn't just because he screwed-up in City. It's because he's a dislikeable wee Rat. I don't like Roddy Collins, even though he's never been at City.
