Care to explain why Sligo had a Che Guevara flag flying in the Showgrounds last Saturday? Oh, and Sligo town is further north than most of County Louth, Ptolemy.

i wouldn't mind but the sort who come up with this crap are about as politically active as my little sister.
i always see palestine flag at barcelona matches and croatian team fans always bring irish flags to matches in uk(linfield in cl an example )
The third flag on that tri colour is a green st.Georges flag with "champions" written across it, presumably a reference to some scottish club
A flag flys at the end of a flag-pole. The majority of so called flags at football matches are banners. If a person or a club were to fly a defaced Irish tricolour on the end of a flag-pole then this could be deemed to be offensive. The only matter of debate then remains if a short pole actually is regarded as a proper flag pole as short poled flags tend to get waved rather than get fixed into position to occupy an official capacity.
I'd get more offended by seeing someone wearing a Rugby Shirt that represents an Irish province advertising Bank of Scotland than I'd get from seeing a few colourful banners appearing in League of Ireland grounds.
If the government really wanted to make a few bob it should introduce an on the spot fine for anyone wearing a sports shirt outside a sporting venue that advertises foreign goods! :D
To the football chant of
"U-S-A, U-S-A" an appropiate response is "Vi-Et-Nam, Vi-Et-Nam".
Certainly UCD fans are clued-up enough to respond in an appropiate manner.
The Flag in question was made by a group of Dundalk Fans for the Celtic vs Porto UEFA cup final. It was not Originally intended to be a DFC Flag but a one off for the final, it has since become a fixture in Oriel. I personally dont know who owns the flag but i do know thats where it came from..
whats that about?
as for political flags I honestly don't have a problem with them - i mean football is the be all and end all of everything so I guess some people want to express everything through their only outlet in life - or something like that - maybe!:)
Wasn't some anti - racism group trying to get the confederate falg banned at cork gah games a while back!?
TV3 have already commissioned a 3 part series starring Brian Denehey as a
down on his luck, divorced, alcoholic FAI match delegate who lost custody of
his daughter due to his wreckless life but he pulls it all together to bring a gang
of Palastine flag waving Shamrock Rovers supporters, disguised as Dundalk fans,
causing mahem around Oriel Park, to justice.
Also starring Maxi as a petrol attendent and Sean Connor as The Devil
This is quite possibly the most pointless thread ever ,its quite sad to be talking about flags ,and der was no racist abuse at the drogs match and none at the rovers match
So, if it's okay to wave a flag which contains your team's colours then would it mean that it's acceptable for team such as Derry City to wave the nazi flag around. I think we may all know the answer to that one.
Google 'UVF' and 'Simply the best' -- the only other time I've seen that slogan on a football flag or banner was at a Rangers match, whose fans are knowingly referring to one of the UVF's mottos. Bohs fans will plead ignorance, well they would. As for Rovers, a group of their supporters were singing some shíte about Dundalk being the Linfield of the south, I'm not even sure what that's supposed to mean, although it's not the first time I've heard it (the last time I heard it was at a match in the mid-90s against Bohs, coincidentally, though it would be no surprise to me if it was same crowd).
Regarding objections to the flying of flags...
Clearly, they are an expression of political sympathy. I'm ok with that. We have Ford, Nokia, Nivea, Kellogg, Des Kelly, Woodies etc. signs at matches, and these are expressions of commercial links.
I can understand the arguments against tricolours or union flags on this island and in Glasgow, and it's just silly to bring a tricolour to, say, a Spurs game. But what's the problem otherwise?
It's more embarrassing that they were quoting a Tina Turner song...
And he said there was none at the Dundalk match even though there was a thread about it on their forum and it was discussed at the duisc meeting.
"Some ****ed up fools started monkey chants at Manseram after he scored. From most people I've talked to, they don't seem to have been regulars at Utd Park so probably just ********s up for the night."
Think you are over-reaching there eelmonster...if ever i hear 'simply the best' on the radio i must now dive to change it cause you just couldnt have a Bohs song on:p ....everyone to their own but i think this Basque/Palestinian/Cuban etc flag flying in attempt of solidarity is getting on for pathetic. As for rascist claims, they did occur at the Drogs match (wasnt in sligo) but while still dispicable from those involved it was a few idiots and not widespread among Drog support.
Oh dear oh dear:rolleyes:
I'd say that the reason you have not seen the flag (which is probably the Flag that has a Bohs crest, a silhouette of Kevin Hunt the number "4" and the phrase "Simply the Best" - was it hanging down by the corner flag at the away terrace in Oriel pk?) is that you have been playing in the 1st division for the last few years so unlikely that you have seen it at a football ground during this period, but don't let that get in the way of your prejudices
:p
Are you serious? No really have you been granted temporary access to a computer in your home?
Might as well give my opinion on the flags and open the can of worms that may keep this thread going for another few pages. I think a lot of the time the hanging, flying and waving of these flags is too show solidarity with the country belonging to the flag. Some may not see this as appropriate as politics and football should not mix but the LOI is not the first place the two have met. This may not be justification but it is often the reason which people are free to agree or disagree with.
