The game against Belgium in '81 was in March, we had 7-8 months to make up the ground. Drawing in Holland in September, and letting France only lose 3-2 in October instead of 3-1, was more important in deciding who went through.
No, the day we paid for it, was when Macedonia scored in the last minute in '99, which allowed Yugoslavia to go through instead of us. :(
