If theres one thing Wenger always has been above all else it's shrewd in the transfer market. Anelka, Henry, Ljungberg, Vieira, Fabregas, Toure etc have all been exceptioal signings.
Granted theres Pascal Cygan.......

Steve, Reyes cost 10.5mill from Sevilla.
I think it might have been rising to 12mill on appearances (which probably won't be reached) but to say around the 20mill mark is an exageration.
Anyone know how good Da Silva is?
Sounds like a bigger gamble alright (unless its near the BBC figure) than his previous 'picking up rejected Frenchmen' strategy.
Like you said, he's probably looking for players for now rather than potentiol at this stage.
I reckon he's out the gap nest summer.
Every clubs going to have their flops but there were times when Wiltord and Reyes were unstopable. I don't recall Jeffers ever doing the job for Arsenal. Cygan wasn't that great either.
It's more often than not, Wenger will sign a player that's not well-known or is underachieving and will turn him into a better player. And he's done it far more often than other managers I can think of.
I've just checked, he signed for 9 million rising to 17 million depending on successes at Arsenal.
So I was wrong, but 17 million is still some whack. Although we will never know how much of the add-ons was satisfied. Probably around 13 or 14 million mark i would say, giving Arsenals lack of success in recent years.
Wenger has as many flops as any other manager.
But where Wenger has it is, he buys in many players at small prices and if they are hits, then he has done great business. If they are flops, well it doesn't really get noticed as they didn't cost much.
Compare this to Alex Ferguson who doesn't often spend small.
He spend 27 million on Veron and he was a big flop and because of the price tag, it got niced(and rightfully so).
He also signed cruyff, Paborsky, Djemba Djemba, Bellion etc who didn't cost 10s of millions like Veron, but combined, it was a few expensive flops.
Liverpool/Newcastle have probably had more flops than the rest of the league put together though. Both teams keep on trying to buy the 1 man to win it for them, it is only now that both Liverpool and Newcastle are now realising it takes a team of 11 players to be successful, not just one talismatic player eg Gerrard for Liverpool, Shearer(obviously before he retired) for Newcastle.
Stephanofs. The worst defender I've ever seen in the Premiership.
In Wnger I/We trust. Yes there have been flops, but the gems more than make up for them. By the way Wiltord was no flop, loved by the Arsenal fans.... as for Reyes, he had his moments.. but I hate him:eek:
Thats well off the mark, Wenger has been the shrewdest manager in the transfer market by far, name me another manager who has come up with the likes of Anelka, Vieira, Fabregas, Pires, Ljungberg, Henry, Clichy and Toure? Sure there have been misses with Reyes, Cygan, and Jeffers, but I'd only count Jeffers as being apart of Wenger's big mistakes, as Reyes problem was his lack of dedication, not skill, when they bought him any manager in the world would have done so at that price and Cygan was never bought to set the world alight, especially given his transfer fee.
And in fairness Steve Bruce, you go on about Da Silva being untested, but in the Buys of the Summer thread you agree that Nani is a snip at £16million, when he is equally untested in a league like the Premiership
