I know Kenny left half way through the 2004 season but its the overall consistancy of Shels against the other clubs that has won them 2 and most likely 3 titles.

Shels and Derry have played each other in 3 league games this season. They have taken 4 points each yet Shels have a more consistant record against the other teams.

The run in towards the end of 2003 is remarkably simialr to this season for the team managed by Kenny. Fixture congestion followed by indifferent results against lesser teams. Derry have taken 12 points from 33 and have had a crap run at home and have only themselves to blame for the fixture pile-up which is hurting them.

Draws at home to Bohs, Bray, Drogheda and a defeat to Drogheda in past month have killed your title challenge. Exact same type of results for Bohs in 2003 when we landed the fixture list from hell as a result of postponements and poor re-fixturing of games.

I'll settle for the cup now. If Shels lose on Friday and we win our next two its all square but it will be extremely difficult. Its Shels to lose now

Shels really only need a win from the last three to clinch it. If Derry drop any points then Shels only need a point.

However, if Cork beat Shels and Derry beat Waterford, we're back in the melting point again.

I don't like the word "bottle" How can Derry reach 2 Cup finals and win through 2 European rounds and not have bottle???

Because in the cups anything can happen on the day. The other team in all likely feels the same pressure.In the league its a different kind of pressure
that grinds you down and wears you out.Its more of a pressure to keep it up
rather than do anything special. A pressure of consistent performance.
Most top flight clubs could win a cup the best only win the league

Ok here's a suggestion for avoiding fixture pile-ups for the likes of Shels and Derry at the start of next season. When the Setanta Cup starts, the participating teams play each other in League fixtures on the Fridays before those games. This would get each participating team in the Setanta Cup, at least three games played in advance before the formal League starts, thus giving them more time for their European fixtures , and avoiding the kind of pile ups seen this season. The games would be competitive you'd be looking at the Likes of Derry V Shels one week, Cork v Derry the next etc

The postponed fixtures have killed us, but I'm not sure we had much choice over when to replay them BTID. Last nite's game may be an exception as it was postponed from July 26th when Drogs and Derry mutually agreed to postpone the game scheduled for the Friday before both our UEFA 1st leg 2nd round ties, which benefited both clubs as they progressed in Europe.

But with 20/20 hindsight I can't help but think we'd have been better to play that game as scheduled.

What was out of our control was the ridiculous 2 week break for the World Cup.

Premiership and Scottish teams manage to progress much further in Europe and still avoid playing 20 odd games in 6 weeks, why can't we?

Because they play the weekend fixtures before and inbetween European games. It is the policy of postponing for European games that's the problem, which comes back to bite those clubs later when their bringing up the issue of fixture. If it's to continue then we should look at extending the season to allow for this, or schedule the qualifiers to play each other around this time, which can then be re-arranged for earlier in the season similar to CTID's suggestion.

make this a sticky - this re scheduling of the euro effected teams has been a disaster for the league (and i also include the ludicrous "world cup break" - which actually reconvenes while the world cup is on!)

the problem does lie with the various managers caught up in the "euro bug"
Kenny is merely making the same errors as Dolan (intertoto) Rico and fenlon before him - they, and the league authorities view euro progress as paramount - than bitch and moan when they have fixture pile up at the end.

Derry's failure is more to do with Drogs coming back into form at the very time when Derry had to play them so often - that was Derry's undoing.

Derry's other defeat to Drogheda was a game postponed in May because of Drogheda's participation in the Setanta Cup final.

Take two games out of the run in and Derry have some serious recovery time when they need it most.

Also, Kenny also did this in 2003. He hasnt learned yet.

The world cup break was a joke but the league did start a week earlier then last year so it wasnt as much an issue as it appears at first glance.

I'd say thats probably true.

We took a gamble, it paid in terms of the Euro run but came back to haunt us in the League.

One difference in relation to Macy's post is that the Irish UEFA teams are always going to be hamstrung playing on a Thursday if clubs don't agree to a Sunday/Monday game, they obviously can't play on the Friday night.

AFAIK re-scheduled games are to be mutually agreed between clubs with the League only intervening in disputes?
