Eircom League clubs in Europe (Irish Times)

Bohs beating Aberdeen was a benchmark. Bohs beating the germans away fgrom home was also a benchmark for winning away but the eL has moved on from moral victories as progressing through ties is what counts.

Bohs lost to Halmstad i think 4-0 o aggregate but Malmo & Djungardens have now been knocked out fo Europe in recent years. Either the eL has improved or Swedes are going backwards. IMO probably a bit of both.

IMO the next step is all eL sides in Europe getting past 1st qualifying round next season.

Malone has done his work when it comes to properly reporting on Eircom League matters. He has got a lot of points right.

I dont know what he is on about co-efficent though. Our co-efficent for the next 3 seasons is a joke. Matching this years run for 3 consective seasons will shoot us up to 30th as everyone who reads this forum will no doubt know.

Bohs did break the mould all those seasons ago and it probably took the time since for the mentality towards Irish soccer to change. Clubs now expect to realistically pass through the first qualifing round while the second needing a bit of work. It was never the case before, all bo ho stories about being a poor relation of European soccer, moral victories etc and some dreadful results.

Thats the biggest change for me, the mentality.

There is that glass ceiling around 26th position alright. Its going to be very tough to get from 30th to 26th.

Getting into the Champions League group stages will be also tough when you consider some of the draws for the third round. However matching the likes of Slavia Prague isnt a massive step when you consider Cork City FC matched them technically.

Maybe the league should concentrate on making the UEFA Cup its prime objective?

Fair article overall with some good points, certainly a much more balanced and well researched view than Gerry McDermott's regular EL bashing efforts!

Caffo was/is ordinary, Bowman was ****e. Aside from that the starting eleven you named was sensational.

How many games did Rob Bowman play for Bohs? F.A. He left the club after the Kaiserslautern games.

How many games did Mark Dempsey play? F.A. Unfortunately. Mark Dempsey was an absolute class act up until his injury anyway. The loss of Dempsey to injury was a great loss to both Bohemians and the Eircom League. Mahon re-signed him the next year but he wasn't the same player at all after successive serious injuries.

Wayne Russell, Shaun Maher, Simon Webb, David Morrison, Kevin Hunt, Trevor Molloy and Glen Crowe were all class acts for Bohemians anyway. Add players like Rutherford... fantastic.
