This thread has gone way off topic.
how so? the topic is relegation, the question is, what is in the future for waterford?
Fans of other clubs just don't want to talk about the future when our name crops up. Something to do with a lack of a future for alot of them might have something to do with it.Quote:

We'll be relegated automatically or via the playoff losing to Sligo and spend a number of years struggling in the First Division before our last remaining director finally decides to throw in the towel after looking reality straight in the face.Quote:

yeah the future is looking bright indeed.
Genuinely hope that you can sort out your problems - a proper club with a proper history. I came away from the RSC the other week obviously elated with the 3 points but also desperately worried for WUFC. Best of luck.Quote:

We're in major trouble and there doesn't look like there's much light at the end of the tunnel. Until we can start holding on to all Waterford players from a young age, we'll never create any sort of continuity with support from the whole city. Just off the top of my head, if we had managed to keep all our good players over the last ten years we'd be in an extremely healthy position. Alan Reynolds, Alan Kirby, Shane Robinson, John Frost - all Waterford men. Neale Fenn, Gary O'Neill, Michael Devine, Daryl Murphy - all former Waterford players - until we can hang on to players like this we'll never manage to create a stable quality squad. Bear in mind as well that for players in Dublin, if offered the same money would choose to stay in Dublin rather than commute to Waterford.
see the thing is it looks like we are going to lose one if not both of Harps and w'ford, great clubs with great traditions, but keep UCD and get dub city....there's no justice.
Totally agree - history is a double-edged sword but I've no problem with us (or Waterford or anyone) using their rich heritage as a selling point. It's all we've had for nearly 20 years and is what were mosty well known for.Quote:

The same goes for Dundalk, Athlone, Limerick, Sligo etc. I'm a sentimentalist (it comes with the territory!) and I want to see the "famous" clubs doing well for the sake of Irish football.

The history of a club is extremely important, anyone suggesting otherwise is hiding behind a lack of one or denying a tradition that has survived long enough to earn a respect, a grudging one perhaps but a respect nonetheless!
We could of course start every season completely afresh & ignore/forget/deny anything that has happened the year before (why not, its all history & we need to draw the line somewhere after all) but i'd prefer to look back at all the old times good & bad as its that that defines what a club really is & to a extent where its going in the future!
Bad doesnt have to always be bad & alot can be learned from the mistakes of the past, i'd like to think the league as a whole will learn from the financial folly of recent years & develop into a sustainabe competitive competition for years to come, by denying the past we are doomed to make the same mistakes as our forefathers & in the modern era i dont know how well the league would cope if it continues indefinitely knifing itself in the back!
I agree with WAR, despite thoroughly enjoying our first win at the RSC last week i felt sorry for the genuine waterford fans who are in a worse situation than we were a few short weeks ago, i hope they can learn from this and move on and have many more seasons for us to try & claim our second win at the RSC!

Really good to hear positive outlooks on other clubs from Rovers fans. Trouble is, I don't see how Waterford can get out of this situation. We don't seem to have a huge debt, and the club hasn't been run into the ground the way the previous Rovers board did, it just seems that nobody in Waterford gives a toss about the team. Nobody wants to sponsor the club, it's impossible to get people to go to the matches and hence we can't generate the money required to get good players. I don't think we're paying the price for overspending because we haven't spent anything recently. Even after last year, a solid league and cup campaign, we didn't attract top class players because we couldn't afford to pay them what they'd get elsewhere.
To keep this on topic though, the way things are going we'll be relegated without a doubt. Unless we can start to score some goals we won't even make the play-off spot, though with the way we're playing at the moment, we wouldn't even win that.
Well a month ago you were telling us all that the club would be gone in a week.Quote:

In that case it seems to me that the worst that will happen to Waterford is that they'll go down, spend a few years in the first division and rebuild effectively from scratch. Not a pleasant prospect but if you don't have much debt, at least the club will still be there and in a position to build towards promotion again.Quote:

jaysus, if i were as optimistic as you then id be saying Rovers were in with a shout of winning the league!Quote:

Then Roddy can lead his side out against the club he disgracefully shafted with Rovers connivance at the end of last season.
Dublin City can get revenge and sweet poetic justice by sending Rovers down.
