We haven't given away any ridiculous goals under O'Shea. I remember him playing terribly against the Swiss away in the last campaign, as did every Irish player on the pitch. I think he'll do fine against the Israelis and is definitely better than Harte defensively.
Against the Faroes, you could be on to something, Jimmy P, although I'd be nervous of him going walkabout while some handy fisherman is standing on his own upfront...

I didn't say it was going to be easy, I'm aware of their home record, so I'm saying that to try and make sure of a win, I think we can afford to play a more attacking line-up with the Faroes, that's all.

Agreed. I have hunch it could be Steve Reid and O'Shea in a few years. Remember Andy Reid plays well centrally too. I'm still holding out hope for Miller but this is probably a bit naive. I like Quinn but he needs to step up a level. I'm hoping Glen Whelan wins his play off.Quote:

Steven Reid has had a decent run of form the last few months - even with some MOM performances amongst them.
But a a crucial WC qualifier like is no game to be chancing our arm. A repeat of his horrific no show against the Russians at Lansdowne, is what has most of us worried I'd wager.
Kavanagh - Kilbane for me are the shoe ins. Though I'm its a wee bit worrying that Kilbane's form has dropped the last couple of months or so. Or thats the impression I've had. Difficult to be thoroughly knowledgable out here in Banff!
Maybe the end of season rest will have done well. It's not Reid's no show against the Russians that I'm afraid of, it's the entire team's no-show that's in my mind. If we stand off this crowd, they'll kill the game. Israel can be beaten comprehensively and put back in their box, I really do believe that, despite the hype that has built up around their results.

The 2 best passers of the ball we have that can play in central midfield and when you consider that our central midfielders will have loads of the ball against Israel it is logical to play the players who will make most use of the ball there.
Of course there is not a snowballs chance in hell that anyone (most notibly Brian Kerr) is actually going to understand this logic.
John O'Shea better passer than Kavanagh? My arse. O'Shea is nowhere near as good a central midfielder as Kav is. Reid-O'Shea, jesus, we'd be murdered. Teams rarely get lower than 40% possession in a match. Of course I don't understand that logic. I wouldn't even be so complacent as to play either of those players in the centre against Israel.
