No they don't. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen players run towards referees screaming and shouting and swearing at them, and they rarely get booked. FFS, Owen Heary pushed a referee at Turners Cross two years ago and the ref didn't even book him for it!
I'll give you an example- I was at an U21 league match between City and UL up in limerick about 3 years ago. The ref was a young fella (he's now on the eircom League panel) and about 5 mins into the game, he gave a free against City. One of the City players turned and screamed "you ****ing wánker" at him. He didn't even speak to the guy about it, let alone card him. If referees don't demand respect, then they're less likely to get it.
