Here's an idea- shoot me down if need be.

what about a LOI fans "protest" outside the ground, with everyone wearing their respective colours and holding banners saying "No to foreign games", just like that famous picture of the sellthick spanner outside croke park a few years ago...

Don't really see the problem with it myself if it wasn't this game it would be something else. The majority of people who will go to this will most likely never bother with Irish clubs. It's just an event for these people no different from a big rugby game, GAA game, concert, etc. Everyone who supports a club here knows the FAI don't really care about the league so will never promote it. Its up to clubs and fans here to promote our own clubs and stop worrying about the FAI and barstoolers because these event junkies aren't ever going to bother with going down to their local club on a Friday or Saturday night.

Huh? It's the Dublin Decider, why would a Longford person think they're welcome? The only true diehard Liverpool fans are from Dublin, that's why they play all their big matches here.

I've written similar things in the past- basically the FAI misses some cheap and easy chances to promote the LOI. It's little wonder that people don't always see the connection between the national team and the league when apparently the FAI don't always do so either.

A Celtic-Liverpool game would be a great place to promote the LOI. These people already like the game- maybe some can be convinced to come along to a few games with some clever marketing. Maybe it won't work, but at least give it a go.

Superb article, exactly what I've been calling for as well. It's an absolute no-brainer, it really does say a lot about how inept the FAI are.
The League of Ireland is providing nearly half the Irish squad without any assistance at all. If the FAI were to even make a few easy efforts for the league, it could help get more talent through our league. Secondly, surely it should be in the FAI's interest to have a culture of people actually going to live games. If attendances increase at LoI games and people see the clear link between former LoI player working there way into the national side, it surely should have a positive spin off for better attendances at international matches.

I agree with other comments about the FAI in some ways being right to milk money from the game and clear of the debt as soon as possible.

What were people's opinions of having the Junior Cup final played before the friendly on Sunday?

Just throwing this out here now, should the FAI host the League Cup final in the Aviva on the same day? Now it's probably too soon for this year but in future woudl it be an idea to stage the league cup final before hand?

Yeah, that bothers me too, especially as the broader context here is the match's positioning within "The Gathering" nonsense. More bread and circuses to entertain the masses whilst Fine Gael and Labour gut the state.

Hmm... I would have though that League Cup final tickets would be cheaper than barstool milking tickets, so either the FAI would have to price out LOI regulars, or give up a lot of barstool revenue. It would be good for publicity, but perhaps also cheapen the LOI by having them so ostensibly playing the part of an undercard for the "main event", which is a meaningless friendly.

The truly sad thing is that the supporters of the UK clubs who are actually from Liverpool, Manchester, London, etc. generally look down their noses at foreign barstoolers. At best they see them as a little pathetic and tragic for desperately trying to tag themselves onto success (and appreciate the lovely bags of money they pump in), at worst they actively hate them for pushing up ticket prices and being at least partially at fault for the current commercialisation of football.

Celtic are slightly different, in that even the Glasgow-based supporters acknowledge a strong Irish connection, but Liverpool? They couldn't care less about plastic fans who think that still tuning in to MOTD when the Reds are in 6th place counts as "sticking with 'pool through the tough times".

It might be an idea to put together a carefully-worded petition and send it to the wider LOI community, opposing the principle of organising such games on home soil. Might be more effective than inidividual emails. If I can still be arsed this evening I'll look into it.
