My definition of a 'sport' is where all the protagonists are willing participants. If you're going to classify Horse Racing as a 'sport' you may as well include bullfighting, bear baiting or that fiesta in Spain where the donkey gets f*cked out of the first floor window. :rolleyes:Quote:

Never been to a corrida myself (neither has my mother - who hates the spectacle - or any of my family) and I can't say it's on my 50 things to do before I die. Galicians (along with Catalans and those from the Canaries. Surprisingly it's still sufficiently popular in the Basque country) seem to be a bit indifferent to bullfighting. La Coruna's old bullring was turned into an indoor arena many years ago, hosting circuses and concerts, although with tourism from Madrid strong in July and August, it still has one corrida for the week when most of Spain goes on holiday, and no doubt to placate any old Falangistas with influence left in La Coruna. Apparently they held one at the Crystal Palace exhibition in the late 19th Century. Legend has it a riot kicked off after police decided to call off the corrida because of its cruelty. So I'd say, given the chance, it might even be popular in England too.
Anyway, I have a feeling NigeSausagepump may be right: We do all know 'what happens when you pair Irish teams and raging favouritism!' :( (My pessimism proved groundless last week, so that's what I'm counting on :D )

Rugby is a minority sport in this country. The national league attracts 3 men and a dog to games, and is such a joke, that it has been virtually scrapped.
The European Cup is made up of "fake" Irish provinces, and with the backing of all the ex-feepaying college boys in RTE, has been hyped out of all proportion to it's following.
"Munster" may get a big crowd when they are winning, but it's easy to get a crowd drawn from a population of about a million, for about 10 games a year.
But I suppose you should enjoy your day in the sun, they don't come around very often, do they?

Like my new friend Lopez, I've never been to a corrida. My dad and brother went to a couple when we lived in Spain (relatives visiting, and so on), but they admitted afterwards it was quite boring.
Actually it's going the other way - Scotland and Wales have gone to a provincial structure. More important to the Fench and English Unions that it's competitive...Quote:

Nice to see Sir Clive beaten on his home turf. He surprisingly modest loser whioch good to see I suppose.
Still the usual english gamesmanship during the game.
- O'Driscoll taken out of the play in first 5 minutes & should have been yellow card.
- Dawson kicked (offside) the ball out the back of the irish scrum in lead up to english try but missed by ref.
- Stringer tripped behind refs back by english player coming back from offside in build up to irish try.
O'Driscoll was dire even allowing for playing out of position. IRFU should let him off abroad for a few years to give young players a chance at a provincial game.
Dempsey ran the ball a few times & must have stunned England.
Aside from early bad penalty miss O'Gara almost perfect & seems to be benefiting from sustained 1st team place.
Amazing now that O'Sullivan actually took Paddy Wallace (who?) to the World Cup instead of D'Arcy.

Haven't seen the Sanish version of bullfighting, but watched the French version on telly and it looks pretty impressive. Lots of pomp and ceremony...and nothing wrong with a little pomposity every now and again!! Would like to go to see one. Think there's a corrida in Barca near the Sagrda Familia (or it can be seen from it, but then again so can lots of the city), but it's only on one or two days a week in the summer.
As you probably guessed, I'm a bit anti-corrida myself. Probably only thing I hate about Spain, although at least 1. They're up front about it. and 2. The bullfighter takes a bit of a risk going into the ring with a bull, even a stupid one (those that go for the man instead of the cape have long been sent through a McDonald's mincer) by Taurine standards and is either drugged or had his horns shaved or more than likely both.

And credit to him his throwing for Ireland has been excellent. His form for Leinster wasnt the greatest tho.

Perhaps tourism doesn't keep it alive, but it is a key factor on the coast. Seeing people from societies which look down on the practice of killing animals for halal meat, sustaining this 'economy' does make me wince. I think you're right about most Spaniards not going to corridas. Most are indifferent, but I read that Vigo's revamping of its bullring has been continually held up by demonstrators, so much that the city has been without a bullfight for some years. When I was in Bilbao last June, students were handing out leaflets about a demonstration called for outside the bullring against the practice. However both Madrid and Alicante have had big demonstrations too, and this is the heartland of the sport. I can see it become as much a controversy in years to come as foxhunting is here.Quote:
