It's an irritating geopolitical term, which has it's roots in imperialist aggression. It's completely understandable that people in Ireland object to it's usage.Quote:

I don't particularly like the phrase either, but the post quoted was clearly rubbish. There's a subtle difference.
I think you'll find that it is geographers that use the term most. It is quite common in any geography texts dealing with 'these islands'. Political academics on the other hand would be more likely to avoid using it..Quote:
