It's hard to call who was more at fault for the Italy goal. McShane is clearly tracking his marker, who drags him out of position. Keogh lets his man free on the overlap. Should Keogh track his man, or stay with the player in possession? Should McShane stay in position, or track his marker?

McShane was poor tonight. Regardless of who was at fault for the goal, Grosso destroyed him during the entire first half. Even after Italy had essentially stopped attacking and were merely lobbing balls over the top of McShane's head to Grosso who was simply running in tramlines. Grosso's a great attacking left back but come on - it's full back 101 to defend those situations and he got it wrong repeatedly.
But he did fairly well in the second like much of the team. He's a liability though. Stephen Kelly had a stinker against Georgia but he's a much more natural - and talented - full back. Poor form or no Kelly would have shackled Grosso at least a little bit.
And even more crucially Kelly is a proper attacking outlet. McShane was game for getting forward but the last time he seen a decent cross was at mass. Thankfully Trap spotted it and switched O'Shea, a slight attacking improvement.
Grosso was completely negated by Stephen Hunt in the second half, he clearly didn't know how to handle the Reading winger
Only one choice to make. The player he was tracking was running away from goal. Grosso was running in behind him. At that stage he had to leave the player and track Grosso who was the immediate threat.Quote:

So, McShane leaves Brighi (who is making a run to the corner of the penalty area) to watch Grosso. Since Grosso is being watched by McShane. Brighi receives the ball and crosses/shoots from the edge of the area. McShane gets criticism for tracking the obvious decoy Grosso, when Brighi is clearly a greater goalscoring threatQuote:

I actually have a feeling Keogh is playing some sort of offside trap on line with McShane, forgetting there's defenders behind them. Just inexperience.
So if we excuse Mc**** for the goal, cane we excuse him for the other handful of incidents where they got in behind him on the left wing during the first half?
Was it just coincidental that Trap moved him to centre half for O'Shea?
If you guys think you can put McShane's inability to position himself properly down to a simple error of tracking back by Keogh then you have serious issues that need dealing with. MC**** IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Squad player without a doubt, but he is a liability when we need to rely on him.
how ****ed off would you be if you were mcshane? he was having a great year with hull, starting almost all their matches. he hasn't played a minute of premiership football since january 27. why did sunderland recall him? i'm assuming because they feared relegation and wanted hull to drop points and ultimately join them in the relegation fight? doesn't make any sense.
McShane can not be in two positions at the same time. The video clearly shows him tracking his own man while Keogh lets his man make the run in to the penalty area. McShane actually gets back to Grosso but doesn't stop the cross but who was supposed to be marking the scorer? Man of the Match Dunne ? No mention of this.
Fantastic display by the team against the world champions on their own patch. Great result and almost a win. Oh, if only that last chance had gone in.
saw him in Jury's before the Bulgaria game .. saw Keith Fahey too at the bar. Impressed that they made the effort to come over and watch the game and that they are fans too at the end of the day.Quote:

Wasn't it Keogh that actually gave away silly possession to start the move for the Italians? I haven't seen a full replay but that's what I initially thought. If that's the case then Keogh would be to blame for it more so than McShane.
Fair enough. To me it looked like McShane was culpable but at very least Keogh gave the ball away far to cheaply. I wouldn't blame Dunne, it was a good cross ball. One of my favourite types of goal to watch.Quote:
