Not my ultimate top 10 but in the interests of avoiding repitition an alternative 10 yet to get a mention
Mean Streets
Scent of a Woman
Once Upon a Time in America
Gladiator
Trading Places
The Silence of the Lambs
Schindlers List
Training Day
Batman - The Dark Knight
School of Rock
Well it is seen by most as the birth of the Summer blockbuster and is hugely popular still today. The theme music and impact it had is pretty huge. I grew up being pretty scared of swimming too far out in Kilkee bay thanks to that damn thing!! Anyway, I would say it's a classic, but I agree, wouldn't make my top ten either. What's your top ten??
Changes practically every day but I'd put these as my top 10 in no particular order (today at least :))
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
The Thin Red Line
Cinema Paradiso
Life Is Beautiful
Goodfellas
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
Back To The Future
Back To The Future 2
City Of God
Mine changes everyday as well however in no particular order:-
Its a wonderful Life
Donie Darko
The Life and Death of Col. Blimp
Godfather II
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930 version - after a shaky start)
The Third Man
Pans Labyrinth
The Life Of Brian
A Matter of Life and Death
American Beauty
Having said that I cant believe I didnt include a Hitchcock film. Also, for me, the start of Great Expectations is the greatest start of any film ever made.
If I could include an 11th film it would Le Boucher (the Butcher - brilliant). The two best silent films for me would be Nosferatu and Sunrise.
It will be probably a totally different list tomorrow
Intresting, Godfather II but no part one in your ten. Strange one that.
Also, as you mentioned It's A Wonderful Life, well Zaavi at the moment is selling a Jimmy Stewart boxset with 6 of his best for only 13 euro. I picked it up yesterday. It contains: Mr Smith Goes To Washington, Anatomy of a Murder, Two Rode Out, and 3 others.
Yeah I genuinely think Back To The Future would be regarded as the best Trilogy had they not made an average third one. I think the first two knock the socks off of the first two Godfathers, Eps 4 and 5 of Star Wars, etc. Have watched both of them about 30 times now and never tire of them.
Lord Of The Rings splits people, but I personally loved the first one and thought the other two were good.
Dr Strangelove should really get a mention too
Why not. I have to say, I think your onto a good idea here. What would your top ten most fun films be? I mean, forget the critic in you, just balls to bones enjoyable? Ok here's ten for now: In no order..
Gremlins
The Burbs
Big Trouble In Little China
Back to the Future Trilogy
Star Wars (Original Trilogy)
Tremors
Die Hard Trilogy
Beetlejuice
Coming To America
Blues Brothers
Not bad at all, Tremors I probably would have forgotten about but is worth a mention alright. I'd add
Aliens, The Lion King, Toy Story 1+2, Breakfast At Tiffanys, Halloween, Romeo + Juliet (1996 version), All of the Marx Brothers really, but Duck Soup in particular, Dumb + Dumber, The Big Lebowski and Predator off the top of my head.
The Big Lebowski and Duck Soup could easily have ended up on my main list, and I'm surprised I haven't put Rocky on either cause what's not to love about that guy and that movie :)
OK the magazine landed on my door and I've had a flick through and surprised at quite a few of the selections.
My top 12 (off the top of my head):
Memento
Goodfellas
Godfather part 1
Taxi Driver
Swingers
Very Bad Things - **** funny
The Good The Bad The Ugly
Terminator 2
The thin red line
Usual Suspects
Being John Malkovich/Adaptation
Die Hard 1
Probably missed out a few classics in my haste to get some films down. Star Wars and LOTR wouldn't get in my top 1000!!!!!!
Halloween, my favourite ever horror. Classic. I must have seen Predator 50 times, Duck Soup is just brilliant. Dumb and Dumber again top class, as well as Big Lebowski. But I find I enjoy Lebowski more when I leave it alone for about a year, then watch it.
A few more springing to mind here,
Comedy: Blazing Saddles, The Ref(Hostile Hostages), National Lampoons Vacation(Chevy Chase Ones), Naked Gun, Stir Crazy and Trading Places.
Cult: The Lost Boys, Office Space, Escape From New York, Fear and Loathing, Nightmare Before Christmas.
Sci-Fi: Total Recall, Running Man, The Thing, Independence Day(Corny but great)
