It's not the second time, must the 4th or 5th time Noely has proclaimed the new manager.

lads Houghton works for RTE, there is no way that Venables wont be the manager now. RTE would not have put this up without checking with Houghton
i find it strange its been leaked like this. its almost as its been leaked by some random anti-venables fai member that knows anti venables members of the press will jump all over it and say the process is a sham etc
Ok. Is it time to start focusing on the positives.
Most of the discussion on Tel the last month or two has been negative (who is the 'least worst' between Tel and Brady).
He has a management record greater (in size and achievement) than any of our previous managers. (ancient history I know)
He will have the respect of the players more than any other current candidate (open to debate )
He is considered a good coach within the game.
I can't think of any more.
Venables and Brady have been the bookies' favourites for some time now, regardless of talk of Houllier, Deschamps, Allardyce or Mick II so I would be inclined to believe the RTÉ report.
Can't say the appointment fills me with hope but sure he can''t be much worse than the previous incumbent.
Does the report say that he's getting the job? I'm having trouble loading up the RTE website for some reason....

Somebody shoot me.
still odds-against on betfair and even money VC bet
There is still a less than 50% chance he gets it according to the betting.
Live in hope i say
Nothing about Venables on the 11pm RTE radio sports news. Nothing on Newstalk sportsnews either. Very strange.
I agree.
If we assume for the moment that he is the new coach.
He would never have been my first choice but that is much more to do with his record off the pitch.
He is very respected as a coach (I have yet to find any record of a top class player that has worked with Venables who has anything bad to say about his coaching ability).
People have mentioned some of the mistakes that he made in the transfer market. You could say that about any manager and it's not relevant to our position so, frankly, I don't care about that.
I think that his manipulation of the English press and sly undermining of Steve McLarens position was pretty despicable. However, it was a bad decision by McLaren to bring Venables in as it's obvious that Tel likes to be the top man.
I know that Venables keeps his buddies in the press close but, in this case, he is the top man and he alone will be judged on results. If they're not good, then he'll get the blame - simple as that.
My main worry about Venables is his commitment. If he really wants to do the job, I truly believe that he is an excellent coach/tactician and could get the best out of our team.
However, if he is simply looking for an easy payday (and a large payoff if it all goes tits up!), then we're in trouble.
A professional organisation would ensure that, if he doesn't give total commitment to the job, he could be dismissed without a big payout. Unfortunately, I have little faith in the FAI to handle it.
I'll always get behind the team and I really hope that Venables can match his considerable skill and experience with a determination to prove that he can still do it at the top level.
If he did, I really think he can move the team onwards and upwards.
I think that we should ignore his previous record and give him a fair chance. It will be pretty obvious in a short time if he really wants to make something of the job or if he justs sees it as a "nice little earner" in between pursuing his other business interests.
The IT posted up a restrained article late this afternoon on the search
Venables remains in the framel
"It is likely the trio will recommend the 65-year-old for the position over the next 10 days. The FAI's Board of Management could then ratify the appointment at their scheduled meeting on January 22nd, thereby allowing the new boss select a squad for the Brazil friendly at Croke Park on February 6th".
Are there any straws left to clutch?
To be honest, I think that's a fairly big leap in logic. The gossip at the awards tonight was that Venables would be recommended by the selection committee, not hugely different from what we've been led to believe for weeks now. There are posters on this board who would have been in attendance so it'll be interesting to see if any further details of this rumour come out here.
Here's the full report on the RTE website that has seen Venables' odds shorten:

Venables set to be panel's choice
Friday, 11 January 2008 22:02
News broke at the Irish Football Writer's Awards dinner on Friday night that the three-man selection panel of Ray Houghton, Don Givens and Don Howe were set to recommend that Terry Venables be offered the vacant Republic of Ireland position.
An FAI board meeting is scheduled for 22 January and Venables could be installed then, but the FAI are refusing to comment on the story.
The awards took place at the Radisson Hotel, at Golden Lane in Dublin, where Paul Doolin of Drogheda United won the manager of the year award.
This report is the only result on google for "Irish Football Writer's Awards". The awards tonight are the Soccer Writers Association of Ireland (SWAI) Awards....Quote:

... and of course the SWAI present a Personality of the Year award, not manager of the year (Shelley and Mooney being among the nominees).Quote:

Rather than a thoroughly fact-checked story, it looks to me like just another of the many, many leaks that the media are so keen to run with so they can later boast that they were FIRST with the news.
Plenty of wiggle room in the choice of words. Eventually, one of these rumours will be correct and someone will do well off the bookies - even if this is the one, there's still a long way to go before the FAI ratify what would clearly be an unpopular appointment.Quote:

My concern with El Tel is whether or not he has the motivation & hunger needed to get our lads into shape, especially mentally. We can't hold onto a lead FFS!
Will he be willing to go to Championship games at Burnely or Ipswich to look at players or will he delegate to others?
Sort of on the positive side he may pull in a few Plastic Paddys I suppose which mighn't be a bad thing. We could use a new Andy Townsend or Ray Houghton.
He won't have a problem with the media and he has seen it all. But is he past his sell by date....
I'm sorry Noely but this is the post that broke the camels back.... I love yer enthusiasm for Ireland and your posts are insightful but I don't know how many times I've heard this manager and that manager from you for the job. Its getting annoying at this stage man,.
Whilst Venables wouldn't be up their with my top choices for the job, I think it's important that if he gets the job (and I have being told he will be getting it, but I never totally trust the grape-vine) we support the man and let him get on with things. He has experience, that is undeniable. After all, if he is good enough to manage Barcelona (and win a league with them), as well as England, then he is certainly nobody for us to be looking down at. Also, if he has got the job, it means the players supported him or at least didn't have a problem with him. We could do far worse and I'm sure he would be driven to succeed.

I just stuck a few quid on el tel so u better be right!
We could always hire a Venables lookalike to throw some buns at the FAI Delegates on their way in to vote...

Ha ha ha ha ha ah ah aha ha ha ah a
Could it be this guy

These are just rumors yet. Wait till we have something more concrete.
If he does get the job as least apres match should be good

I know people in Kerry are rumoured to be slow but this is taking the biscuit.
This is from RTE not me. I'm not 100% convinced this is a done deal yet. If it is Venables then so be it. Not the worst coach around by any means. I still believe we missed a chance to get someone like Beenhakker or Bilic. Not someone who was going to have us playing Brazilian football but who fully understands how we play and how the opposition plays.
I'm convinced John Delaney was going to go European (mainland) after Staunton. He then spoke to a players grouping after the Wales game in Cardiff and spoke to Giles and then everything changed. Suddenly Venables came into the picture. JD should have trusted his own judgement. I am not a Venables hater and hope he might get us over the line for the next WC finals. But we never tried to get the best managers (for us)out there. Not Houllier who I believe is a bluffer. But Beenhakker, Bilic and others. Managers on a low income but proven international ability. Instead we ended up with Hoddle, Brady/Giles and now Venners. All OK people but not what we need. But I support the new Ireland manager.
RAFLMBFAO
Quote me on that, ................................
Nothing confirmed yet.Quote:
TERRY VENABLES last night moved a step closer to becoming Steve Staunton's successor after Bulgaria named their manager.
The former England boss looks a short-priced favourite to manage Ireland after Plamen Markov was re-appointed Bulgaria coach with a two-year contract.

More leaks and rumours but it's looking more like El Tel by the minute.
This was posted 2 months ago but it's pretty well done.

I wonder when will the FAI listen to the people who pay their wages. It is clear on this board which is made up of Irish football fans that Terry Venables is not the man we want, the poll demonstrates as much. So I suppose we simply accept another manager who lacks the credentials that we crave? Maybe they realise we are just a spineless bunch and as soon as he is appointed we will come out with all the usual "o well never mind, lets get behind him". Its a f*cking farce that we are going to be faced once again, with a man in charge that we don't want.
You dont seriously think that either of these would leave their respective teams to join a shambles like ours ?Personally if that piano player and jellied eel eating C..t gets the job i am going to find it hard to go to a game again ,for the love of jasus please do not appoint Venables.
terrible news if true. really ****ed off, it just goes to show really how much they considered it if venables is the best that we can get. im so ****ed off now.
If he becomes manager then thats it..............i'm out
The FAI have yet to deny the RTE story. Yet you can still get 5/6 on Venables.
I tought the exact same think when Jack got the job, and was disgusted with his first game v Wales at the RDS, the rest's history, (never stopped supporting the team) however i'm not expecting history to repeat itself.
If TV gets the job, id put money on him quiting within a month of the 2nd Italian qualifier, with a nice multi million pay off off our euros.
