Wow, that would mean it's been five years since an Irish international came straight through a Premier League club's youth system to play for the first team, without going out on loan to a lower league team - and Clark was technically still an England international at the time. That said, we do have a number of promising young players coming through Championship and League One teams. And with the success of Coleman, Meyler, McClean, Doyle etc, it's clear that young players can get experience in the League of Ireland and still realistically aspire to the play at the top level of football. So maybe this wait doesn't necessarily indicate that we need to be overly worried about players going straight into Premier League teams. Still, it would be nice if we were sitting here twelve months from now talking about the likes of Jack Byrne, Alex O'Hanlon and/or Daniel Cleary making a breakthrough.
