Czech-born Tom Stoppard wrote a play/BBC Production in response to the Charter 77 movement in Czechoslovakia countering the regime there at the time.
Its about a philosophy academic who takes up an invitation to give a speech on ethics in Prague, but he took up the invite 'cos England were due to play a World Cup qualifier at the same time [no historical match took place].
While he is there, one of his former students, Hollar, arrives at his hotel and asks him to smuggle out a paper for him, the professor initially refuses.
The academics of the conference share the same hotel as the International players and journalists so there is some interaction.
There's small references to football, also ethics and the correct thing to do.
IN the BBC production Peter Barkwith stars and Stephen Rea plays the Czech former student (y'know scruffy, long hair)

Not impressed by trailer but I could be wrong.
Did see a clip which is supposed to be Spain i think (filmed in Mexico) where guy runs up to car & drags out the driver shouting "secret service" as he commandeers the car. Aside from the language barrier I think a Spaniard who neither know are care who the secret service was.
Malcolm X,just over 3hours long.Amazing film
saw in brugge with brendan gleeson and colin farrell. did anyone else see it. thought it was very good. a few laugh out loud moments
Saw 2 films over the weekend:
Semi-Pro - Now I'm a big fan of Will Ferrell (for my sins :o ) but this was by far one of the worst films I've ever seen. A one-joke film where the one joke isn't even funny.
The Prestige - This came highly recommended to me by a friend and I was also a fan of Nolans previous work (Memento in particular) so I was really looking forward to it. Very disappointed by the ending, I was hoping for something unexpected but it just ended up a bit silly....
Thumbs down on both!
"There Will Be Blood" was the best movie I've seen at the cinema in a long time. Daniel Day-Lewis was immense as usual. Saw the start of "Vantage Point" at the cinema yesterday before walking out (for the first time ever) and thought it was woeful, though perhaps the ending makes up for it. I would not recommend going to see it to anyone. I saw "In Bruges" too yesterday. I really wasn't looking forward to it, but ended up loving it. It was pretty funny and Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are great together in it. It's definitely worth a look.
Havent seen vantage point but i like the concept of the same part played over 8 times , Johnathan ross was raving about it and Forest is one of my favourite actors , ill be seeing it soon hopefully
I bought a Christopher Guest box set ages ago and finally got around to watching Waiting for Guffman, its brilliant, if you liked Spinal Tap or Best in Show its well wort a look
yeah man say it again! GUFFMAN is the masterpiece of mockumentaries. often over-looked in favor of the latter two you've named but corky and ron albertson are far and away some of the funniest sh!t i've ever seen. the albertson's audition for the play, uh, the mind reels...
Got Stardust out on DVD, not bad at all for a 'kids' movie
would anybody recomond in bruges.thinking of seeing it during easter
Manhunter made in 1986 is on Channel 6 now. I believe Red Dragon was made based on the same book.
The tits on Meatloaf!
I watched the hoax (Richard Gere and the Howard Hughes fake memoirs) last night - not a bad wee film. Worth a watch - 6/7 out of 10.
Only got around to watching The Lives Of Others last week. Thought it was very good. Think HMV has it on sale so will go and buy it.
Rentals this weekend: The Assassination of Jesse James....beautifully shot and the acting is pretty good too. I wonder if the bit at the end is true?
I also got The Counterfeiters, not bad at all. And to balance up all the "serious" films I went for 30 Days of Night and Mr. Brooks which where both OK.
Not much in the cinema at the moment that I want to see. Saw In Bruges a couple of weeks ago, very funny! Went to see There Will Be Blood a second time and enjoyed it even more second time around. Less anticipation/expectation and paid more attention to overall details.
Bought Stardust and Fast Food Nation on DVD. Haven't seen either yet but have heard good things about both movies.
Bought Eastern Promises on DVD, Great performance from Viggo Mortensen & a great film, would seriously recommend it, also bought an old Denzel Washington film called Devil in a Blue Dress....its brilliant too, a great performance from Don Cheadle in that one
I don't know if it's been mentioned but Clerks is a pretty good film. Very funny in an off-beat way. Mallrats isn't as good.
Has anybody seen Funny Games yet?
Watched PTU - Police Tactical Unit the other night, another pretty solid flick from the Dragon Dynasty collection.
Watched "We own the Night" also, had some expectations for it,but felt it was pretty much a let down.
we'll just have to agree to disagree on that one. I think it has it all, laugh out loud one liners, really lump in the throat emotional scenes and of course the trademark Smith Dialogue (is there any better writer of dialogue out there at the moment) all that and Joey Lauren Adams.... Hot Hot Hot
Anything with Vincent Price....
Anyone seen 21? Any good?
I'm looking forward to getting this out next week, can't wait to see it. I hear the soundtrack is pretty good too?Quote:

I was bored on Friday night and had a free pass for the cinema, so I went to see Never Back Down.
Pretty much what I expected, it's almost a shot for shot remake of The Karate Kid, with MMA instead of Karate.
Few minor swerves (as opposed to outright twists) in it, wouldn't be a bad DVD rental
