By Elo ratings, Scotland are 39th and we're 42nd, 8 points behind them. That translates into an expected score of about 49% against them. A year ago we had 128 points on them - we'd be expected to score about 75% against them. They're dangerous.

We've dropped four more places to a new record low of 70th in the latest rankings released today: http://www.goal.com/en-ie/news/3942/...fa-ranking-low
And everyone says we're 'making progress'.
Hmm.
I'll measure progress in terms of tournaments qualified for, not FIFA ranking changes based on friendly results.
Wales are 41st, clearly they are 28 places better than us from what I saw against Holland last night!!! C'mon, feck those rankings.... Scotland 27th!!!!!
Really?
If I might wear a PO'S/PR hat, how so?
Because you can go down in the rankings without playing a game, obviously. You can go down in the rankings because you drew with Italy when beating San Marino would have seen you go up.
70th... MON out!
Someone away from here, was hypothesizing that if European teams lost their WC games, this could potentially assist us or other teams not competing, in the UEFA rankings?
Can see the theory, but can't see it making any realistic difference to us though?
We remain 70th in latest release: http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/world...-top-rankings/
Germany top the rankings for the first time in twenty years, whilst Spain have fallen rather dramatically from first to eighth after their dismal World Cup.
We're up four to 66th in the latest release of rankings: https://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/news/...094718667.html
Onwards and upwards!

It really is a mental system. Poor Spain take their eye off the ball for two games, after nearly six years of invincibility, and drop to 7th!
A choice of rankings:

Yeah, strange the North don't get a mention...at least 4-5 other teams shouldn't be on that list either.
And Ireland 33? The 'Delaney effect' ?
His post on here gives rather more context.

Ha ha. But no more praise. Sorry!
Aye, see #618...
Yeah, that'll be it, though as pointed out continuously elsewhere, 'Ulaidh' is not just the North and who in their right mind uses Latin to describe anything anyway, FFS...
Indeed... Far from Hibernia we were raised...
Probably the only thing GR & The Holy Father will ever have in common. An implausible use of Latin...
So are we slowly on the up ...... ?
Our September results in recent years have been poor so I'd expect we'll get a pretty decent bump from this.
We shouldn't get too complacent though. Gibraltar usually come good round October.
This site is usually pretty accurate.

It has us jumping to no. 54. My quick calcs have us coming in around 56th but there are still games to play.
Wales and Scotland will be somewhere between 27-29th. England up a couple of places to 18th.
Northern Ireland big movers back close to 70th.
Hmmm....... just below Iceland now with a game to go this evening, if we don't win that game then we will have to suffer the ignominy of being overtaken in the rankings by the hoofers from Ireland.
Yep... Iceland went into warp drive this evening to leap well ahead of the 3rd raters.
There was an old law in Iceland (only repealed in the 1970's), that it was okay to kill a Turk.
Still hold true though in some respects, their football teams just get hammered here.
Morning and congratulations to all ;)
Just a slight correction to A/Bhoy above, I started my primary education with the Ursuline Sisters and was briefly a mention of the Legion of Mary in Dublin.
58th the latest prediction
Wales/Scotland joint 29th
England 18th
Northern Ireland 71st
Wales have some midfield, they have 6 or 7 players that would definitely be in our team. They are way underacheiving and this should be their golden era. Last night the pitch didnt help them at all but they should be looking at Coleman and asking questions.
