I think Everton fans forget just how good they had it when a healthy Gibson had a run in the team. I don't think Martinez rates him when he's fully fit either.

I think that's a reasonable assumption with regards Martinez, but what makes you say that about the Everton fans?

If there was no interest from Man Utd he probably would have phrased that response differently, so I take it the interest isn't all paper talk?

is gibson injured again? everton having a poor season and gibson doesn't seen to be getting near the team. i guess he's about 5th choice central midfielder? barkley, besic and barry must all be ahead of him.

I think it's more a case that he's still injured, than injured again. He's not competing the Barkley really but Barry, McCarthy and Besic are definitely ahead of him for the two holding roles.

oh right... i thought he had only just come back from injury just before we played scotland. i didn't realise he got injured subsequently.

I don't think you can say that for certain, it's not simply a ranking of 1-4. Different combinations would come into play, possibly something like one of Barry/Gibson with one of McCarthy/Besic. Injuries certainly haven't helped his cause anyway with regards to the pecking order. His last appearance for Everton was against Sunderland where he came on for Barry early on ahead of Besic. He then went on international duty and withdrew from the squad following the Scotland game and hasn't been seen since. This 'minor knock' as described by the FAI on twitter has turned into a 2 and 1/2 month layoff with no return date. He was apparently close to a return in December but that never materialised, possibly hinting at him suffering setbacks or complications.

Yeah there could be a bit of tweaking here and there that would suit him, as he probably is a more like for like replacement for Barry. In general though, I think it's fair enough to assume he has a lot of catching up to do to become a more prominent figure than any of those three.

Certainly. McCarthy's recent problems have also given Besic a run of games and the Everton fans are impressed, despite their recent woes. With Gibson being out for so long and with his past history of injuries he has a lot to do to win the hearts and minds back of the fans and probably the manager as well. He could face having to look elsewhere if the management feel they can't continue to wait for him to get and stay fit going forward.

Starts tonight against Young Boys with McCarthy and Barry also in midfield.

A bizarrely strong team with The Emirates on Sunday. I'll join the conspiracy club if Mac or Seamie pick up knocks tonight :)

Just had a quick look and Gibson seems to be playing just ahead of McCarthy and Barry.

I only saw a few bits of the match some classy defending from Coleman at one point,
however I don't think these young boys are up to much if Everton can beat them 7-2 overall.

Yeah although I heard the commentator saying they beat Basel 4-2 at the weekend, not to be sniffed at as Geysir will eagerly testify.

Came on against Leicester on Sunday and got 90 minutes tonight against Young Boys Bern. Joy to watch in both appearances spraying the quick passes all over the place. Somehow full of confidence and compared to last time he looks to be moving freely as well as being in great shape. After the false dawn last time it's hard to get expectations too high but hopefully this is the start of some great performances for club and country going forward. MOTM in both games according to the Everton fans on their biggest forum. The through-ball for Mirallas after slipping past his man was a thing of beauty.

I was impressed with him against Leicester alright, head up all the time. A couple of his passes went a bit astray, one badly astray but at least he was trying to force the issue, which is exactly what Everton needed. Himself and McCarthy could be great, McCarthy covering the ground and keeping it simple, Gibson holding his position but the more adventurous ball player.

First league start in a year and a half for Gibson tonight, alongside McCarthy and Coleman.

And apparently he's injured again!!!
