Next Ireland manager?

what a total nonsense. Where is the motivation now for McCarthy if he knows he is gone in 2020? He will be a total lame duck with unhappy players not needing to buckle down cause they know he is out the door anyway. Really hope Mick does not stand for this. Kenny been feted here as a coach despite the view from clubs where he has worked that coaching on the training ground is not his strength in any way. Have dundalk produced many players from their youth sides for the first team or higher leagues in the last 5 years? The underage structures below 21s have been doing quite nicely over the last 5/6 years how arrogant to think Kenny will overhaul this

You wonder do the FAI have the money for McCarthy for more than two years?

The O'Brien money is gone, the stadium debt is still there, and Kenny certainly won't be on 1.2m a year.

Is this a gamble on qualifying for 2020 and the cheap option after that?

Just wondering who this is affecting more negatively - the FAI or the journalists reporting on stories that haven't been confirmed by any party yet, other than Kenny leaving Dundalk

If McCarthy qualifies us for Euro 2020 then surely he would want to stay for a World Cup campaign also. Appointing Kenny in advance is silly considering we do not even know how he is going to get on with the U21 team yet.

is 2 yrs enough for kenny to make a difference at under age level? in reality its only effectively about 16 months if we fail to qualify for 2020. i am not against the idea but kennys time at underage level is too short to make a difference

You'd probably be right if you were comparing like with like, but just by taking the U21s seriously he'll be making a difference. This doesn't just represent a new U21 manager, it represents a change of thinking with regard to the U21s. No longer will players from Inter Milan or Liverpool be overlooked because there's a chance of recruiting a bloke from Doncaster with an Irish granny.

It looks good on paper, and may prove to be in reality as well. The chances of that would be considerably higher if McCarthy was 5 to 10 years older imo.

It also has the potential to be a complete mess.

I can't leave the board and go out for a few hours but return to find the world has been turned totally upside down. Kenny leaving Dundalk (say it ain't so!) and the FAI have made more promises than Haughey in 1982 to lure him away.

Gutted with this from a club point of view (obviously). Especially after thinking we were in the clear. Need to understand the details covered in the press conference tomorrow before really seeing how I feel about it from a country point of view.

Right now it seems to fall somewhere between a stroke of genius and complete lunacy.

The managerial race was over before it got into any stride. This has to be the shortest ever next manager thread. The FAI manage to scuttle one of few pleasures we have, a thread that you keep on fast dial.

The jury is out on Kenny for me and think the calling for him to get the top job in Irish football completely OTT. Never managed anything other than LOI and the time he did was sacked at Dunfermline. Was sacked at Bohs and Shamrock Rovers too. Did a good job at Dundalk alright and had them playing good football but the LOI is not a good standard. We tried hiring LOI managers before and none of them worked out so why will this will be any different. Grand for the U21 job but the senior job is a different kettle of fish.

I still want that flake Delaney gone. He is only bothered about himself & getting in McCarthy with Robbie on the coaching ticket is all about his self preservation.

I really don't understand any negativity towards the Kenny aspect of this announcement. For all his flaws, I think Delaney has made some utterly brilliant decisions this week. All week I was hoping they'd give Kenny the job but I think this is a far better outcome. The likes of Idah, Parrott and Connolly are in a pair of very safe hands as he will be over-seeing their development from an Ireland perspective for the next 2 years. They'll be 19, 18 and 20 (I think) respectively by the time Kenny is our manager.

Think you're being a bit harsh on Kenny.
In fairness to him he did get Dunfermline to the Scottish cup final and beat Rangers, Hearts & Hibernian along the way. Granted they got relegated too though.

So he succeeded in getting players to play "good football" in a league that is "not a good standard"? Is that not highly positive?

And tell me what Dunfermline and Bohs have done since he left? Kenny was 30 when he took over Bohs. I'm sure he's learned a thing or two since.

I don't understand this perspective. People make mistakes in life and develop and improve. This man is clearly and markedly progressing as a manager.

Look, I really hope it all works out and he gets us playing good football but I just hope the Irish job isn't too big for him. I guess we'll all have to wait and see.

Just to put a real cat amongst the pigeons, what if the proposed bid to co-host the U21 Championships is successful, and Kenny decides he wants to manage his country at it?

I'm actually very happy with this, from where we were a week ago. Its a little unorthodox, but suitable people in suitable roles, I'll take it. Happily.

If these appointments work out, the FAI will have had a huge slice of luck. If McCarthy does better than expected and Kenny worse than expected, they will find themselves in a very embarrassing situation 2 years down the road. I wish Kenny well but I wanted him to stay at Dundalk and get them competitive in the European leagues again over the next few years before moving on to the national job. The development of the domestic league is absolutely crucial to the international team and his contribution and legacy to Irish football from repeating what Dundalk did a couple of years could be greater than what he achieves with the national team. You only need to look at Corks performances in Europe over the last few years to know what the future could be now for Irish clubs
