Dundalk FC manager Seán McCaffrey is expecting to announce up to six signings during the coming week, after admitting he is pleased with the progress he is making as he sets about building a squad for the new season.
The 52-year-old, whose appointment at Oriel Park was confirmed last Friday afternoon, made his first signing shortly after when promising striker Mark Griffin put pen to paper on a fresh one-year deal.
And the Monaghan town native is hoping to add more players to his squad before the New Year.
“We are,” McCaffrey told dundalkfc.com when asked if he was making good progress in his attempts to assemble a squad, with pre-season just around the corner.
“Between Friday and New Year’s Day, we’ll have sat down with about 20 players.
“Apart from Mark Griffin, we haven’t signed anybody just yet because I don’t believe in meeting a player and signing him and going on ahead.
“He needs to be happy with what he’s coming to and we need to be happy with him.
“But we’ve sat down with five or six players and we’re just waiting on them to come back to us in the next few days.
“I would say in the coming week we’ll maybe be announcing five or six players. We’ve told people that the earliest they have to come back to us is the day after Saint Stephen’s Day.
“There are three or four experienced players that we would like to get in but primarily there will be a lot of young players, with the emphasis being on young players who were over in England and didn’t just quite make it, or young fellas who would be better off staying in the League of Ireland for a few seasons before heading over.
“And then as well as that, there are some very good local players in Dundalk. Stephen McDonnell is a cracking player.
“There is a good youth setup at Dundalk. There are people there, like John Whyte, Mick Neville and Martin Connolly – they have done a great job with the young players. So, we’ll tap into that as well.”
Meenan can be a class player on his day, but when he was with Harps he had a serious attitude problem. Not sure what he's like now in that department, but he has ability, thats for sure.
Maybe good enough at Harps level but not as a PD player.
Great player but **** poor work rate
He did, yeah. Scored a couple of great goals (including against Pat's).
I'd be worried about losing gabriel sava ...not sure how solid we will be in goals but I suppose we've the majority of the defensive unit kept.. and also worrie dabout up front. from what I understand we have kept 9 all defence and midfield..good news i suppose as they are important areas where teamwork is vital maybe we're just saving up to buy a lone striker who will pick up the ball and whizz through defences on his own.....
Who's in the running for the Derry job, plus did I hear over xmas that Foster applied for Bohs???????????????
Higgins has been offered a contract by Glentoran, according to some of their fans.
There's been 3 applications for the new Derry manager, one of them from outside the country.
i think foster is a really good manager. when you think of it he was one or two injuries from finishing well...he went for quality instead of quantity so you have to admire him for that risk. would like to see him back in ireland ..he'll harden up too with experience..still very very young.
I think we need some experience in midfield too, the midfield vs Galway were all under 21. But as always I suppose:

Karl Sheppard's being cryptic on twitter. I'm guessing these means he's had interest from England.

Sammy I dont think Pizza and Felix will get the job, the job isnt right time for Pizza, id be looking at Pat Dolan, Damien Richardson, Kenny Cunningham and David Kelly for the Position with Decky Devine continuing as assistant, anybody any other ideas
If Rico didn't go for the Rovers job I'd be surprised if he would be in for the muckers role.
I can't see Dolan giving up the TV work for what would be a full time position or close on.
Cunningham is less experienced in management than Pizza.
Would David Kelly relocate?
Also, is Deccy not heading to Rovers with Mr Bean?
Why would anyone want Rico? Chap hasn't a clue.
Heard that Ross Gaynor has signed for Rovers.
Any of Dundalk/Drogheda lads be able to confirm?
If so, Cookie has some serious firepower, something which cost us the league last season.
