They're actually two different things. St Stephen's Day is the 26th, but Boxing Day is the first non-Sunday after Christmas (although that wiki article seems to contradict itself on that topic).

Also, it's officially St Stephen's Day here, not Boxing Day, so if we take it that we can call it what we want, we may as well start using American spellings or other stuff just because we can. Boxing Day seems to have traditions in the landed gentry, who'd be rather more English than Irish.

None of which really means you can't call it Boxing Day if you want. But it does seem that, in this country at least, St Stephen's Day is clearly the correct term. For whatever that does.

Meh, will still call it Boxing Day. Its what I grew up with. I was born in the north to a northern mother with northern family so it will ever be Boxing Day to me. I am a West Brit by all accounts anyway so may as well be hung for this one too.

Rather strange Christmas for me. Got stuck in Stansted airport for the best part of two days, St. Mel's cathedral fire in Longford, know it's bricks and mortar, but most Longfordians have an attachment to that place. Down with the flu and flying to london in the morning and hoping i'll have work when I get back. Strange time and personally can't wait to see the back of 2009.

Coz we are the best County in Ireland! There has always been a strong poultry industry here, even though it has died off somewhat in the last 10 years. We used to be the top dogs for mushrooms and furniture too. In fact at one stage we could have built a wall around us and been self sufficient as almost everything you could need was here. Dam Celtic Tiger and people expecting higher wages has killed off our local economy though.

yeah thats bit rough (no joke was intended there)
my dog died a few weeks back, i was gutted.
i have another dog now and ya can tell he is lonely

at that stage its like part of the family

Wow, in the last couple of weeks three people on foot have lost a canine family member, as did a guy I work with. His dog, Elvis, died of heat exhaustion, aged 7.. always makes me kind of uncomfortable when I see thick coated dogs here in Australia.

My Aunt's dog died yesterday too, I think the extreme cold might be playing a part, she was at least 16 years old and her health had been deteriorating over the years but the vet was always happy she wasn't in pain despite it all, my cousins are 13 and 8 and the dog has literally been around for all of their lives so it's very sad for them :(.
