Where to start with this? :o

Nothing to be proud of. A half empty stadium. FAI's three year plan mentioned selling out the Aviva for cup final every year if I recall correctly. If that's the case they've got some work to do to make it happen.
In fairness to them, it was great tickets were available so early this year, I bought mine months ago. However, the overall marketing is still miles from where it needs to be. The big attendance last season was down to the club's doing Trojan marketing and PR work.
would have been a stretch to get 30k at this tbh.
Of the 2 clubs in the final - one is located the furthest from Dublin in the league, and the other probably has the smallest total/latent support of Dublin's 4 main clubs.
You can't hold the FAI responsible for who gets to the final.
They should have kept tickets at €10 (or at least only increased them to €15), but that wouldn't have resulted in a sell out either (and would probably have reduced total revenues from the event too).
I think ye might be missing my point. FAI want sell outs over the next few years, every year, regardless who's in it. Bar selling tickets a bit earlier, what changes have they made to actively push things along?
im not sure what else they can do really. apart from a few billboards and some ads on tv/radio what else can be done? the family deal is very good. 40EURO for 2 adults + 2 kids is excellent value. ultimately a november game in a freezing cold aviva is going to be a hard sell to any neutrals IMO regardless of participants
What changes are you suggesting would get 51,000 to an FAI Cup Final ? There probably hasn't been a crowd that big since the 1930s/40s (?). And it would be adding another 50% to last year's bumper crowd.
The FAI aren't magicians. Though that also underlines the vacuousness of them having 'targets' like this, which are just talk and pointless space-fillers in a 'strategy' document.
Exactly. Anyone taking an FAI statement literally, or even half seriously, is going to be left disappointed.
How would they fill the Aviva if the final was Cobh v Wexford? They’d be lucky to get 5K never mind 50K.
Realistically, the only way they’d fill the aviva for a cup final would be if it was Bohs v Rovers - 2 Dublin teams and the biggest derby on the island.
But even then it would probably need BOTH of them having v good seasons and challenging at the top of the table.
Not even that, they've actively made it more difficult to achieve their, already widely optimistic, target. Removing the final from FAI ST holders for a start, that'll knock a few thousand off. I don't understand the reasons behind that decision. Then doubling the price of a ticket. €20 is still a good price if you're a fan of a club in the final, but at €10, you'd get a lot more Dublin-based people who will just head along last minute for a day out, I would guess. €20 makes that a much harder sell.
What else could they do to improve attendance? Not too sure. Maybe work with CIÉ make transport handy? I know Translink have organised a train and some buses from Derry, but demand well outstripped supply. The GAA seem to get special trains put on fairly regularly, so it can certainly be done.
Other than that, maybe look at offering youth teams cheap/free tickets. Maybe they already do that, and it would likely only work for Dublin-based clubs.
At guess, you may have 15k Derry fans at it tops, and that's probably the limit of what we would ever take to a final. I think an overall total of 30k would represent a very good attendance, but can't see it reaching that at all.
You can't be making these excuses like that. Both Derry and Shels are as well established in the League as anybody. No reason it should not be the same level as last year really.
I would say though that if you wanted a consistently high crowd for the final, you would have to rely heavily on neutral fans and make it a 'festival' type event. But even the basics aren't covered. There needs to be way more advertising of the game so that every soccer fan in the country has it drilled into their heads that this game is happening. FAI can not leave that to the clubs themselves. If both teams bring 15k (huge compared to average home gates), there would still be 25k seats that could be filled, and this is up to the FAI to fill them with neutrals.
Also, how come Shels seem to have a lower ceiling in growth compared to the other Dublin clubs? Would they be better off trying to move to back to their original home in South East Dublin, or moving with Dubliners to the suburbs in Finglas (ala Rovers and Tallaght)?
2 clubs who haven't been in the cup final in a number of years, and can possibly draw on a largeish dormant fanbase should be able to get 25-30k attendence I would have thought.
I'm heading to the final and my wife is coming along to. We'll be sitting in the East stand Premium section(tix are a steal @ €35) with Derry colours on and shouting for the Candystripes!
Derry fans of old were always good friends to Dundalk back in the day when they were trying to establish themselves in the LOI and i've made some great friendships up in that part of the country over the years. Regardless of the attendance it will be a great day out.
It's only a few years ago we were getting 600/700 in the first division and some fans boycotting. The club was in the first division for the guts of ten years and the one season we got up crowds weren't allowed at most of the games.
FAI saying 25,000 tickets are sold now. 30k should be achievable now.
Looking forward to this Sunday. Will they break the 30 k mark?
Announced over 25,000 ticket sold a few days ago. Forecast for Sunday is Partially Cloudy and 16c. That will help with neutrals on the day. Should get over 30,000 really.
It's great going from the 10 to 15k we were only getting back in the late noughties
Forgot all about him! Your post made me think about what his reaction to the rise in crowds would be today. I’d imagine it’d go something like this :D https://youtu.be/VnTpl93q3Bc
Over 30,000 tickets sold now. Quite impressed.
That's great going. 50 50 split so far? I heard 15k for Derry so I assume it's close to that.
More of a weighting to Derry than 50/50. Heard a figure of 20k Derry tickets on the radio, but that may be overtsating it.
In fairness, I've never seen this sort of excitment around final before. The city is buzzing, flags out everywhere, schools doing jersey days and all.
Certainly seems like there'll be a greater Derry support than the total attendance in our last final (17k in 2014).
Fantastic scenes in Derry tonight pre cup final, I am sure you will all see on social media. Really is a buzz around the place and speculation we aren’t far off 20,000 which I expect is slightly exaggerated but I have no doubt our ticket sales are fantastic and the best post treble season.
I wonder what a Derry- Rovers final either would have hit this season or may hit in the next few years - will be best possible chance of an aviva sell out you’d expect.
I`m looking forward to the final myself, a stress-free day now that we don't need to be hoping for Derry to win, and can enjoy the roast beef with a nice glass of red! Memories of our traditional pre-match cup final dinners in Jurys in 2015-16-17-18 +19, missed out in 2020 (Covid).
Good luck to both teams, it's a special day for the fans, nice family occasion too, we always took the kids, I`m going for a 2-1 win for Derry, which will obviously be music for Pats ears, but Shels won't make it easy for Derry.
Hopefully it will be a good game.
To both sets of fans, enjoy the day , big deal and biggest day in the calendar, hope it’s a good game of ball, from what I’ve seen of both v us it’ll be a cracker. Have a feeling there will be cards and defo a red ( mr Boyd?) goals songs laughs and please don’t let us be talkin about the attention seekin referee after it .
I wouldn't think so, Rovers v Bohs would probably be the best chance of a highest ever attendance at a modern FAI Cup Final, but that said no way would it sell 50k.
Bohs v Pats last year was the record at the Aviva at 37k, before that it was Rovers v Sligo with 36k in 2010, then the Dundalk v Cork 4 in a row finals with an avg of 26k. Would Derry v Rovers draw more than 2019 final of Rovers v Dundalk (33k), not sure.
Rovers v Bohs in 1945 still the record I think at 41k, and in 1985 lowest I could find with 7k at Rovers v Galway.
Got my ticket! Last bit of live football for me for the year :D The attendances since Aviva opened have been amazing. Think that Rovers v Galway match in '85 was a replay? or even a 2nd replay? 7k is grim enough though - glad they did away with them.
Atmosphere at last years with 37k was incredible, felt full for it. Cup final is really turning back into the spectacle it should be.
Last year certainly was incredible. Really felt like a proper big occasion. Never thought I’d see the day with that sort of attendance at a Pats match. The increase in crowds since the pandemic has been one of the best news stories I can remember about the league. Long may it continue.
Hoping for a Derry win, obviously. Just spotted that on RTE 2 before the match they are showing a documentary made in 1975 about Shels, originally prodcast on the run up to that years cup final. Should be worth a watch.
1983–84 UCD 0 – 0 / 2 – 1 (R) Shamrock Rovers Dalymount Park / Tolka Park 8,000 / 6,500
1984–85 Shamrock Rovers 1 – 0 Galway United Dalymount Park 7,000
1985–86 Shamrock Rovers 2 – 0 Waterford United Dalymount Park 11,500
1986–87 Shamrock Rovers 3 – 0 Dundalk Dalymount Park 8,569
1987–88 Dundalk 1 – 0 Derry City Dalymount Park 21,000
1988–89 Derry City 0 – 0 / 1 – 0 (R) Cork City Dalymount Park / Dalymount Park 20,000 / 12,000
No the Galway game wasn't a replay, you're prob thinking of the UCD one, above is the list of the last 6 finals played in Dalymount before the switch to Lansdowne, 3 more moved back to Dalymount in the 90's for some reason, then Tolka early 00's, then even RDS and one in Tallaght before perm move to Aviva in 2010.
The mid 80's crowds were just brutal, a lot league games in the 10's would have beaten those. Derry in 88 + 89 put a bit of respectability back to it.
Pre match crowd troubles again this year. Not sure who the aggressors were today but stuff like this and the Bohs fans carry on pre match last year will surely prevent a sell out ever happening at the cup final in the future if it continues every year. Once a reputation for this crap is obtained it’s very hard to get rid of and will put off potential neutrals from heading in to the match no doubt

Apparently the Guard’s had a big part to play in it,walked the Shels fans down past the Derry fans, not making excuses but apparently it could have been avoided….
