We were made to pay - dejected McCarthy

Defender Paddy McCarthy admits that the Leicester City squad were "frustrated" and "disappointed" after their 2-2 draw with Watford on Tuesday night.

City looked to be heading for their fourth home win of the season after Joey Gudjonsson's goals had put them 2-1 up.

And that position was streng-thened by the dismissal of Watford defender Clarke Carlisle early in the second half following two bookable offences.

But City failed to capitalise on their advantage and were pegged back let in the game.

Watford defender Malky Mackay scored his first goal for Watford from close range to tie the game 2-2.

The result clearly hurt the City players, who felt they should have closed the game out and taken all three points.

And a despondent McCarthy said: "Frustrating is a good word to sum up the feelings in the dressing room.

"To be 2-1 up and playing against 10 men, we should be finishing the game off, looking to finish the game a bit earlier.

"Everybody is disappointed that we didn't win. We played well. During the game I don't think Rab Douglas had a save to make, apart from the two goals.

"We seem to be saying the same things. They had two chances and put them away, we haven't taken ours and we have been made to pay."

The point leaves City in 16th, while Watford remain third and Sheffield United are up next at the Walkers Stadium.

McCarthy has no worries that the team will pick themselves up for the visit of Neil Warnock's men.

Indeed, the defender is looking to put right City's opening-day 4-1 defeat at Bramall Lane.

"We won't need any picking up," he said. "We have a big game at the weekend. I don't think there's anything to fear there. We will be looking forward to that and to settle a few old scores."

i had half an eye on it stutt, he seemed solid and wasnt culpable for the goal conceded.bolton went for the win with a front 3 which included Nolan so the back 4 had to stay put generally speaking so he didnt do as much work higher up the pitch as when ive previously seen him, still when he did venture up at one point he played Nolan in behind with a beautifully weighted pass down the line.

BTW, John Barnes, on his show presenting the game spoke again of Nolans availability for the republic through parentage, and his guest Pat Nevin(?) declared that england would be fools not to get him signed up quickly.

Maybury Hoping To Rewrite The Script

Alan Maybury is hoping to return home with a smile on his face on Saturday evening.

The 27-year-old defender has seen his side win only four Championship matches so far this season and as a result they go into this afternoon's clash against high-fliers Sheffield United in 16th place.

He said: "It doesn't matter who it is - it can be my neighbours or my family. I just seem to be going back to them after each game with the same hard luck story.

"It's the same for all our fans. We just want a few more wins and send everyone home happy.

"Hopefully we can do that against Sheffield United on Saturday."

While the Foxes have experienced an indifferent start to the season, the Blades, on the other hand, are riding high under manager Neil Warnock and are second in the table.

City crashed 4-1 at Bramall Lane on the opening day of the season but Maybury is convinced that his side can right the wrongs of Tuesday night and topple the Blades at the Walkers Stadium.

"I don't think it is an issue as to where people are in the league at the moment," the Republic of Ireland international added.

"I don't believe the table is worth looking at until around March. Sheffield United have started well and they are a decent side but we have done well against the better sides so far and I don't think we've got anything to fear.

"Nobody we have come up against has outplayed or outfought us. We just need to make a few better decisions but we aren't a million miles away."

Maybury is also keen to repay the faith the Blue Army have shown in the team to date.

"We are the players out on the pitch and we are responsible. It would be great to give the fans a win to cheer about for a change.

"The fans were patient with us against Watford on Tuesday, and that has been the case all season, but the whole place was flat at the end of the game.

"I don't think anyone could quite believe what had happened.

"The 2-2 draw was extremely disappointing and anybody who'd have come into the dressing room afterwards would have thought that we'd been well beaten."

Maybury started the match in midweek at left-back before reverting to his preferred position on the right-hand side of the defence.

He added: "I am more comfortable on the right and didn't start well against Watford and hold my hands up to that.

"But Richard (Stearman) did really well over on the left when we switched.

"We'll have to wait and see what happens on Saturday afternoon."

leicester v sheff utd 4-2

the day began with a minutes applause for George Best.

McCarthy and Maybury played for leicester and Kenny,Quinn and Geary all played for sheff utd in a game with 6 goals and 10 bookings, of which Geary got one and Maybury another for a moment of handbags with Quinn.the ref was definately a bit trigger happy as it was a full blooded encounter but not a nasty game.

McCarthy had a decent 90 after a bit of an iffy start when an awkard jump by him saw leicester concede a free kick from the off in a dangerous area and 2 attempted hacked clearences looped over his own head anf towards his own goal, but neither was punished and he settled down to have a good game.

Maybury was excellent throughout,although always sound defensively he offered much more going forward than recently, very comfortable with the ball on the offensive he was frequently involved in nice build up play and delivered some good crosses.he also beat 2 men at one point and drew a save from Kenny in the utd goal from a very tight angle.

the 2 utd goals werent errors from the lads,one was a fine flowing move, the other a header from a hotly disputed corner in injury time.

for united,Geary,while impressive going forward with some good centers and once forcing a fine stop from Douglas and overlapping cleverly all game,defensively he faced Smith on loan from arsenal and the youngster gave a m.o.t.m. performance and gave Geary a real chasing at times.

Qiunn looked good early on and much of sheff utds good work went through him abd he also drew a save from Douglas with a free-kick which he got up and down over the wall nicely but in the second half when his side needed to re-establish themselves in the game, he was'nt involved enough for my liking but he was far from being the only utd player to go missing.

Kenny was beaten 4 times but that doesnt really tell the story of his afternoon,not to blame for any of the goals conceded, he also made 2 fine one-on-one saves from leicesters Hammond where he stoot up well and out foxed the striker, a better striker may have removed him from the equation and the home crowd saw them as poor misses, but he can only play whats in front of him and on both those occasions he did very well i thought.

leicester needed this, the new manager has been here over a year now and the playing budget this season was still among the biggest in the division so being 3 points outside the bottom 3 and 9 off the playoffs was not what is expected and fairly or unfairly, there was the beginnings of revolution in the air. hopefully this win will buy the time needed and give the confidence required to this young side to continue to develop.

Peers one scored and Dawson made one with a beautifull 30/40 yard pass in mansfields win.

Bell scored and McCafferty played for rushden... and Reddy made 2 of grimsbys 3 with fine crosses and made good headway om the wing before backhealing it to the guy who crossed for the goal for their third,

and Goodwin scored for scunny with Keogh also playing.

Billy Clarke made his debut for Ipswich last night, coming on as a sub against Cardiff.
Colin Doyle joined Millwall on loan from Birmingham and played at the weekend against Leeds.

We are ready for test - but we also aim to take our own game to Bolton

City defender Patrick Mccarthy could be up against a Bolton onslaught tomorrow night - but he believes it might not be as simple as that.

The Premiership side will be eager to make the most of home advantage against lesser opposition in the Carling Cup, but the Irish Under-21 international thinks they will not get it all their own way.

He said: "It is a massive game and we won't fear them. Hopefully we will take the game to them and match them in all parts of the field. They play 4-5-1 and, whatever formation the gaffer chooses against them, we have enough good attacking players to get the win."

McCarthy coped well with Sheffield United's bright attack at the Walkers Stadium on Saturday, underlining the form of the settled defence with Patrik Gerrbrand alongside him, but he also pointed to elsewhere for the praise.

He said: "We have started to defend well and I think the play of Patrick Kisnorbo just in front of the defence has a lot to do with that. Since he has done that it has made a big difference to the back four.

"Saturday showed we have got enough to match anyone in our league and hopefully we can take that forward.

"Now we are looking forward to taking to a bigger stage. That is what it is all about.

"We will not get carried away with Saturday but just concentrate on the two big games coming up, Bolton and Leeds.

"The Bolton game should be a good one to play in. The Prem-iership is where we all want to be and it should be a good game.

"It will be physical but so is every game in our division so we should be ready for it.

"We will go into it confident that we can win. It will be a good test for all of us and we tend to do well against big sides

Karl Bermingham was restored to Man City's reserve side, and started on the wing against Bolton's reserves at the City of Manchester stadium
City won 3-1 with Bermingham proving the cross the lead to the opening goal and set up Miller late on who unfortunately failed to convert

Interesting debut too. Came on with 25mins to go & exhibited the first touch of an elephant but his one & only chance to run with the ball saw him turn Jeff Whitley inside out and he was fouled. Ipswich equalised from the resulting free & Clarke was subbed immediately so Ipswich could defend the 1-1. I stopped watching when he went off. I presume it finished that way.

Is Stephen Elliott injured? Not even on Sunderland's bench recently despite being the only forward who can get a goal up there.

bolton v leicester 2-1 aet

Maybury started and played tho 90, McCarthy was rested but came on late in the game(84), but still managed to get booked and Sheehan came on in extra time and delivered one quality deadball to Dublins head which but for a great save from the keeper would have brought it to penalties.

the 2nd choice keeper was due to play but got injured in training this week but Levein went with Douglas in goal and no keeper on the bench, so no involvment for Logan.

no O'Brien for bolton, hopefully this means he is now considered 1st team and rested like 9 others for the tie, i hope its not an injury.

Allerdyce said he would give O'Brien a rest as he doesn't want to over expose him. Since he didn't start the last 2 games I assume this is his break.

Excellent corner by Duff for Chelsea to score just there. He had a quiet first half but Mourinho has given him more freedom in the 2nd and he's producing some of his trademark runs. At one stage he beat 2 or 3 players and took the wrong option of passing to Gudjohnson when he should have shot.

/edit - Another superb run by Duff into the penalty box. Sets up Drogba who hits it over the bar from 6 yards.

O'Brien was back for Bolton against Arsenal. If he's good enough to be in a side that can beat Arsenal then he'd be wasted in our U21 side. He's our most credible cover for Finnan at the moment, including Stephen Kelly, and he's not even a natural right back.

All the Irish impressed me from the TV highlights, except Partridge :(

Whelan's passing is superb. Quinn was as industrious as ever & scored a good goal. Murphy was really unlucky not to score with a curling shot that had Kenny beaten all ends up. Kenny had a very solid game. Coughlan played well too & is always a threat from corners. I reckon he's probably our 4th or 5th best CB at the moment, though he's probably found his level. I like the look at that Norther Ireland lad Brunt. I've seen him a few times now & wish he was ours!

OK, so TV highlights don't give the full picture I admit but still I liked what I saw.

David van Zanten scored his 3rd goal of the Season for Scottish Division 1 leaders St Mirren against Ross County on Saturday. They are 7 points clear at the top at the minute, so he may well be playing in the Scottish Premiership next season.

Maybury and McCarthy both played and Kelly, Butler and Miller played for leeds.another decent game for Maybury bit McCarthy got the headlines after losing his cool with the officials when they allowed the leeds winner to stand despite a fairly cut and dried offside call, and was sent off.he got a 2 game immediate ban today so wont be available for leicesters game live on sky this friday or crewe either.

Craig says McCarthy will be fined

Leicester boss Craig Levein confirmed that he would be fining Patrick McCarthy after he was sent off in their 2-1 loss at Leeds - but he criticised the officials for allowing Matthew Kilgallon's winner that led to the red card.
Levein and McCarthy both felt Kilgallon was offside when he scored the decisive goal in the 73rd minute.

He added: "I am not condoning at all what Patrick McCarthy did. It was wrong to go running towards the linesman. The referee has reacted to something he has said and he deserves to go if that is the case. I have no complaints whatsoever with that.

"But the whole thing comes about because the linesman has made a big mistake and it has cost us.

"That goal changed the game. They had a little spell, but we were comfortable and we didn't have any problems. I thought that we played most of the game in their half and we have played some good stuff.

"It was a turning point. They got a goal that shouldn't have been a goal and it took us down to 10 men.

"But I must credit my players for their undoubted effort in the last 15 minutes of the game. I thought that we battered them for that period. We had good chances to score and we didn't take them."

He confirmed: "Paddy will get fined and he has no excuses. I don't know if we would have got back into the match with 11 men, but we might have done and it is certainly more difficult to do so with 10."

Leeds coach John Carver was unsure, saying: "From where we were sitting in the dug-out we couldn't tell if the goal was offside. I'd need to see it on TV. But we didn't have what we thought was a penalty in the first half.

"It was a good game. The first 20 minutes was the best I've seen for a long time. It was a spectacular advertisement for the Championship.

"In fairness, them losing a guy inspired them and they went for it again. I'm very much surprised to see where Leicester are in the league. They are certainly one of the sides who can be in the top six."

Clarke was on the bench for West Ham at Birmingham last night. Progress!

Darren Potter was taken off in Liverpool's reserves 2-0 win over Man United's second string. It looked like a serious enough injury at the time, but was later revealed to be just a slight muscle spasm.

I'm a little surprised he played to be honest, he's usually in Benitez's European squads

to be honest i dont really know,as i wasnt at this one and the reports ive read have been largely the leicester viewpoint but on the highlights on itv and sky it showed that Miller skimmed the crossbar with a volley from distance which showed nice technique.

Garry Breen was on the bench for Man City U-18's in their 3-2 win over Coventry's U-18's in the FA Youth Cup, but never made it onto the pitch

Looks like a determined defender who reads the game very well.
Diarmuid O'Carroll: For long periods it looked like it was going to be a frustrating day for the powerful Irish striker, who gives 100% commitment, holds the ball up well and packs a mean shot. But he kept battling away and got his reward when he was on hand to nick the first, a good poacher's goal. In the second half he had a very physical battle with the gigantic Well centre-half Steve McDonald, challenging him for every high ball and giving him a very uncomfortable time all in. Still available for the Under-19s but looks to be a real battler. And, at around 6ft tall, he is a great build for a centre forward in the Mark Hughes mould. Reckon we'll be seeing a bit more of the bold Diarmuid!

Came on for Agathe after 48 minutes and immediately made himself at home, demanding possession, taking on his man, firing in crosses, step-overs, flicking the ball through his legs and so on. And I bet Craig reid on the right of Celtic's three-man defence was happy to see him. Big Jim powered up and down the flank, but the minute Well broke on the left, he immediately tucked in to the right back slot, allowing Reid to provide cover in the centre for Darren O'Dea. Textbook stuff. This lad has the build, the skill, the match intelligence, the confidence and the application. I expect big things from him over the next 12 months.

Jay Tabb scored for Brentford in their win over 3-2 win over Yeovil. Brentford are now up to third in League 1, so we could see him play in the Championship next season.

Paul McShane set to return against Hull. Injury less severe than first thought.

Anyone know if Henderson is injured or just dropped?

leicester reserves v charlton reserves 0-5

Logan played the 90 and is credited with a good save at nil-one and isnt singled out for blame for any of the 5 goals, but either way, not a happy evening for him.Sheehan played for an hour, the report doesnt say why he was replaced, or mention him in any way.as far as i can make out he sometimes plays at centre-half for the reserve side.

Randolph played for charlton and had a fairly comfortable time as the charlton side featured Rommedahl,Hughes,Euell,Fortune and Bartlett against a leicester side who only had Sheehan with any 1st team experience

Republic of Ireland underage manager Sean McCaffrey has backed Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Darren Randolph to reach the summit of professional football after the 17-year-old’s latest top-drawer display.

Randolph, who has also been tipped as a future basketball star and is the son of Killester star Ed, is the undisputed number one in the current Irish under-19 set-up which is currently in Italy preparing for May’s second phase of qualifiers for this summer’s Uefa finals.

The Addicks shotstoppper made two top-class saves in Tuesday’s first game against the Italians to help McCaffrey’s under-19s to a scoreless draw in Corato.

And although UCD’s Darren Quigley is expected to get his chance in the second and final game in Bisceglie this afternoon (Thursday), McCaffrey has left observers in no doubt that Randolph is his number one.

He told the Irish Sun: “I’ve never seen anyone as good in my time in youth football. He’s confident, has great technique and takes the ball in so many different positions. He’s brave, intelligent and a good kicker. He’s a fantastic prospect. Plus he’s also a good lad and very easy to work with.”

Funnily enough, another young Irish Keeper at Charlton Rob Elliot has gone on loan to Accrington and played for them in the Conference on Saturday.
Elliot played a few games for Notts County on loan last season .

Just to let you know, McGovern plays for the north. O'Brien declared for us yeah.

Stutts - Henderson is injured. Just reading a Brighton forum and they rate him highly.

My mistake, I've only ever heard him described as Irish, so I assumed it meant Republic of Ireland, rather than Northern Ireland

Gary Walsh is from the Republic, right winger. Paul Cahillane is another Irish player at Celtic, he's a left winger and only 16. I asked the fella who runs that blog about him a while ago and got this reply (I asked was he a Damien Duff type winger):

Already there are signs that he is improving.
There's quite a bit to go yet before he could even think about challenging for a first team place but I would imagine he'll be in the running for the Ireland Under-17 squad.

Other Irish that haven't been mentioned are keeper, Paul Skinner, and another 16 year old left winger, Graham Carey.

Cahillane and Carey have played in the U17 teams together on either wing and they seem like the Duff and Robben of that level. Very skillful players willing to take on their men but both seem a bit greedy.

Stoke vs Leicester on TV tonight. I presume McCarthy is suspended though.
