Mervue and Salthill did not break any rules either and they were encouraged to exit (sort of) the league, so I can understand the suggestion that Fran Gavin should relegate UCD to the 1st division and when there, bar them from getting promotion. The principle is there already as Sheridan has pointed out. Maybe they should be given one last chance to see if they can grow their fan base. There must be some people connected with the college team who can do a little bit of marketing that would bring in a minimum extra 100 home fans to every match. For example offer Shamrock R season ticket holders entry for 5euro, when their team is playing outside Dublin; Gateshead do this over in the Northeast of England for Newcastle fans.

UCD, despite their low attendances, generally remain in the premier and unearth good LOI players. They're probably the most consistently well run club in the league. Maybe that's what really annoys people about them- they highlight the weaknesses of the rest of the clubs. If the rest got their act together UCD would be eternally bouncing along the bottom of the first division and would probably have gone away years ago.

Yeah you see the real problem with Ucd is that they make the other teams in the loi look like they are run by total and utter gimps! How can a team that gets a couple of hundred people per game compete with teams that get a couple of thousand??? Because they are better run. If the people who run Ucd ran one of the "big" clubs they would consistently win the league. If some of the people running the "big" clubs ran Ucd they would be out of business!

Maybe it's because UCD isn't run mostly by volunteers like most other clubs? And it's the most stable because it has the largest 3rd level college in Ireland backing it and supplying free facilities?!

Pretty sure Ucd is mostly run by volunteers. 1 full time person I think. My point above was that a lot of people running bigger clubs would turn Ucd into a pub team within in a year even with the help the college give. Anyway absolutely shocking attendance for the limerick game regardless!

Football isnt all about attendances:rolleyes: You are not entitled to anything just because you have a big fanbase.
UCD are there on merit and long may it continue, they play a lovely style of football, and consistently uncover great players.

In defence of directors at other clubs- because UCD have a model they are happy with and there's no great pressure to change, they have it relatively easy. At other clubs the pressure is always there to deliver results to keep the income stream flowing and fans happy. It's a very difficult balance and often goes wrong.

No attendance announced at Rovers but it was pretty poor. Maybe 12-1500. UCD's fan was there with his banners.

aye but only about 60 odd of them. Very good home crowd considering it was bucketing down all night and freezing cold!

There'd been a big appeal out for people to get out and support the team and not turn their back on them just cause they'd lost a few games. Probably only so many times you can make that appeal all the same.
