A matter of two goals isn't that massive a difference. We've never had a high-ranking Premier League goal-scorer since Robbie was at Spurs or since Kevin Doyle was banging them in for Reading.
Their roles for Stoke and Everton aren't at all conducive to goal-scoring. Barry Ferguson, to use another midfielder who patrols a similar area of the pitch as an example, played for Birmingham over 70 times but didn't score once. In 78 game for Blackpool, he's tallied a single goal.Quote:
Whelan and McCarthy are midfielders, not centre backs. They would be expected to average more than 1 goal in every 90 games.
He's been on the bench because he wasn't playing well. Now he is playing well. Our own strikers have been in similar situations. I'm not sure what point you seek to make, that Scotland's strikers are currently on better form than ours but weren't a few months ago? Clearly a crisis brewing.
And no, scoring lots of goals for mediocre teams in a lesser league is not as big an achievement as it would be were they playing for better sides. It's an achievement but the fact they haven't been able to reach a higher level suggests other deficiencies.
To answer my own question, Best and Walters were the leading Irish goalscorers with 6 each in the 2010/2011 season. Heh. Looks like I was being unnecessarily pessimistic. We are a long ways away from the halcyon days of Keane and Doyle banging them in on a regular basis.
McGeady brought on for the final seconds but didn't get a touch.
He started against palace didn't he?and McCarthy started on the bench.I'm not reallybsure that phrase is correct but I'll just follow the others on that...anyway perhaps that was telling, maybe Martinez felt he made a mistake for that game.
But remember he is working on his fitness and giving him a few seconds is helping build on that.
Coleman awarded 'man of the match' by Sky Sports.
Hopefully Man Utd bid 15m for him this summer. Long-term he has a higher chance of featuring in the CL for them and there is not a chance in hell Arsenal, City or Chelsea will sign an Irish player.
Walters with 10, plus one in the League Cup. Long also had 11 overall last season, 8 in the league, two in the league cup, and one in the fa cup
10 starts, plus 6 times off the bench
dunno, they're both predominately defensive midfielders, neither have a history of goalscoring at any level but still seem to be regulars for their respective clubs sides through their careers to date. Whelan was used as a stick to beat Trapattoni with for most of his tenure, so he probably gets more than he deserves
Long and Walters were joint leading Irish goalscorers in the Premier League last season with 8 goals apiece.
Sorry, you're right. I counted his two against palace in the cup.
Hopefully for Ireland's sake, Coleman will stay put. Much though I'd love to see him at Old Trafford, is it coincidence that the attacking side of his game has taken off in leaps and bounds with a new manager, one less inclined to play cautious, defensive football?
Coleman showered with praise on MOTD, there was a nice bit where he nicked the ball off Rooney too,
unusually to see him in the middle of the park bombing forward.
They seem to have missed out his MoM award on his stats here.

Martin Keown and Danny Murphy heaping praise upon Coleman's ability and endeavour on 'MOTD':

Fantastic video there of Coleman talents, aside from his fantastic runs he shows great all round ability, like Martin Keown I
was impressed with his work in a more midfield area when he took the ball off Rooney, he looked a class above the Man U players
he was up against. Reminded me of Roy Keane at his best. He certainly seems able to play in midfield.

Ireland U-19 International, Ryan Robinson, is set for a move to Everton on the back of making his League debut against Waterford.
Whilst Macca rumors persist.
