I'm extremely surprised that he would go to Celtic given all the abuse he suffered in Scotland after he declared for Ireland. Who knows what was happening behind the scenes, but I'd be much more impressed with these two signings if they had been made a month ago, and not now. Celtic's season is already over.

Given McCarthy's problems with injuries, I think this is a good move for him. The Europa League will offer a good standard of football and is probably a more appropriate level for Celtic to compete in these days. Obviously the domestic league is a step down but hopefully that means he can be rotated appropriately, with perhaps him being used primarily in Europe and big domestic matches (Old Firm, etc).Quote:

At the end of the day, every player wants to play in a World Cup. If he’s fit I have no doubt he will make himself available and will start.
I think the step down in Scotland will be better for him physically as he won’t be as run down all the time given his team will enjoy more possession and won’t be chasing all the time. Hopefully this translates into him being fitter and more energetic for us. Wishful thinking perhaps.
