Photo Thread

Just thought I'd stick up some art of mine that's received a bit of exposure of late. These are a series of three artistic photographs - titled 'Union' - I produced to comment on the current economic and political climate in Europe and the repercussions circumstances have had for the concepts of national sovereignty and identity:

The work was selected for display (next to work by Banksy, Stella Vine, Gillian Wearing and Joseph Beuys) at NOISEfestival's 'Art of Protest' exhibition in Manchester during the week and will be London-bound on Wednesday to coincide with the NUS demo against cuts (or so I'm told anyway), so pretty chuffed with that.

(Oh, and the intention behind the desecration of the flags is not to insult the identities represented - one of which I proudly call my own - but rather to replicate in a satirical sense the degradation of national sovereignty/identity that has come with austerity/globalisation. Although, I'm confident the flag-related word-play should provide a clue as to my intentions.)

These were another series of artistic photos of Donegal's Laggan district (home to Donegal's Ulster-Scots community), Glenveagh and Kilmainham Jail that I edited using Photoshop and by superimposing text to comment on the legacy of conflict over land in Ireland, and especially Ulster.

I think I've posted some of those before without the additional text, but I thought the text, which generally relates to what is depicted in a literal sense, would also add an extra dimension of metaphorical meaning to the eerie landscapes and scenes by unearthing the histories found within through allusions to notions of contested/shared space, competing narratives, "us"/"them", memory, power, ownership, tenure, inheritance, division, distrust, isolation, surveillance, imprisonment, paranoia, abandonment, betrayal, alienation, grievance and, dare I say, hope amongst others.

The work of Derry artist Willie Doherty was a significant influence.

I was at a friend's wedding last week in Argentina. I've taken a few panoramic shots with my phone, so I decided to take a quick shot of the street the wedding was on.

About two hours later I reviewed the pic, and I had unknowingly taken a shot of the newlyweds kissing at the gate. A second earlier and everyone was standing around them, a second later and the kiss was over, so it really was a lucky shot. If I had planned it, it never would have looked as natural

Both bride and groom are delighted with it, and I've posted it here with their permission

Well funnily following on from that idiot with the tattoo. I wonder whats under the hat. There seems to be an even bigger embarassment hiding under there.

I was out on a Housing inspection during the week. One of the 'visitors' to the property had a Gun tattooed above his ear so on his scalp. His hair wasn't that short and it looked like Permanent marker.

On the way back from the visit I spotted this. As I approached I thought I bet I'll find something wrong on this. I did. Work camera at the ready.

I'm not mad into photography but I've been trying to utilize it a tad more lately, it suits the type of subject matter I'm interested in at the moment and is fairly handy for getting reference material for my drawings and prints. I started trying to put together a slightly better online portfolio the last week and I've a folder on it of some photos I took at Flancare and Jackman Park last year. Some of you may like them so thought I'd link it here. Off to take some more shots this weekend so hopefully I get something nice! Am open to both positive and negative feedback if anyone wants to throw some my way.

For your not been too interested in photography you've not done to badly there. I'm a big fan of black and white and then you surprised me with the colour exposure for the Longford Town player.

Thanks! I've spent the last two days hanging around empty football grounds taking some more photos, I'll upload a few once I've sifted through them, its easy to take hundreds without even realizing. I think this batch are a slight improvement hopefully.

Good man. I'd like to see those. I have a fascination with football grounds and I'd love to see more of the old grounds that have now disappeared. I've been to many a ground that now no longer exists and it's very rarely that I am enthralled by the new ground.

I'll just stick to linking my pictures on external sites, have too many to be uploading here. Tried to in the town forum earlier and encountered all sorts of annoyances..

While out running recently in the most recent snow's I was lucky enough to have my phone and I have to say in all my 33 years I'd never seen snow drift like it so much so that after a good 4 miles out which was largely ascent from my place I was stopped in my tracks by at first the quite spectacular

You don't live in Donegal for a few years without encountering sheep on a very regular basis. Of course you start out with being defence of any suggestions of improper conduct and then you accept it and then you get to where Nigel is and encourage the suggestions.

On a side note, in my school days I worked for a part time farmer on the foothills of the Ox Mountain's, Co. Sligo. A nice old part of the world too and many a happy summer I spent there. One day we were parked up and the guy I was working for, been a very often serious ma, pointed to a shed in the middle of a field with sheep in it. He mentioned the fact the particular farmer was well known for sheep bothering. Just at that moment, and in the distance the farmer emerged from the shed and the sheep scattered. It was timely and did nothing to cause me doubts on his suggestion.

yeah I was banished to outer Mongolia! Some ground that has its own Ger camp.
Funny to see that the only foreigner (Black fella) had the wag - "see ya later" he shouted to her as he walked off the pitch - she was dressed to the nines and looked a bit out of place amongst the 20 or so fans!
