Really, who would they be?

Dennis Law.
The point I was making is that TonyD never said that the national team should be made up of el players. He just said it was the attitude of majority of National team fans towards his team made it difficult for him to have much sympathy for the travails of the national team. Jbyrne assumed he was saying the National team should have more EL players. I merely pointed out he never said that.
A well supported league would in turn lead to stronger domestic clubs. Stronger domestic clubs may be able to hold on to / develop talent. This would have a knock on effect on the amount of players available to the national team. So as an IRELAND FAN I think people should support the domestic game as much as they can. And not knock it continuously.
Your interpretation of my post is 100% accurate Bill. I can only assume jbyrne didn't read it as carefully as you did:p. And to jbyrne, I don't think I said Jason Byrne or George O'Callaghan, or any EL player, was good enough for the Irish team, did I ? (in fact I've posted the exact opposite in a discussion on the EL forum) Finally, to Neil, who said I was on the wrong forum - I try not to post too much on the Ireland section here (damn, just when I thought I was out, they drag me back in:D) I suppose I do have a passing interest, but I just don't consider myself a supporter of the Irish team anymore.
What do you mean then by the phrase "what passes for the NATIONAL team" ?
He has already explained his position. Clearly.
