At least it ends a 9 game unwinnable run (8 defeats, 1 draw) for LOI Clubs!
Liam Buckleys 5th European Win from 23 games. Also, his first clean sheet in 11 games, last was v IBV in 2012.
His away record: W-1 D-3 L-7 F-11 A-23.
He has never achieved a clean sheet AWAY. His only AWAY Win was in 2003 v Odra Wodzisław
watched it as a neutral (or, at least, not a Pats fan)...
Thought Esch were pretty dire overall. First 20 minutes in particular they were all over the place. Had no interest in getting their players upfield, so their ineptitude with the ball simply presented Pats with loads of dangerous possession. Added to that. their keeper was completely hopeless dealing with crosses, either flapping wildly or rooted to his line, and Pats must have missed three or four free headers in and around the six yard box.
Second half Pats had loads of the ball but struggled to make any chances - a lot of sloppy through-balls and wayward crosses. I can only remember one decent effort on target from Fagan, whereas the visitors missed a sitter at the other end which would have turned the tie in their favour. The fullback O'Brien was impressive - Dennehy at centre half less so. Fagan was far too isolated up front, despite some good movement off the ball. oh and as for Keith Treacy... when I heard Pats had made a big signing....
Is the win worth anything financially or is it only if you progress?
Decent first half performance from us could have been 2 or 3 up but we were shocking in the second half and they should have equalised. Kelly and Fagan were our better players while Tracey despite being a few stones overweight was also decent. B Dennehy and Conan Byrne were both terrible.
It was a woeful game of football really. Pats probably deserving of the win but had they won by more it would have flattered them. Esch were terrible but still shaded it in the second half.
No away goals scored and got the home win I suppose. An away goal for Pats and the tie is over.
There is no excuse for Pats not to go through even if they didnt finish the tie tonight. Even a fairly ropy Dundalk under Foster got the better of a Luxembourg side, and away the heat was nuts. There isnt a heatwave hitting the continent that should bother us pasty pale types so good job St Pats! Just dont chuck it away now.
Poor game dished up from two poor sides. I thought Juenesse were a woeful bad side & one of the worst I've seen us play in european football . It was great to get the early goal but there was more to be had. I'm sick of giving off about our lacklustre midfield this season, it's hard to know what awaits me in Luxembourg next week I'd take an away goal victory at this stage.
Pretty awful stuff last night, along with Olimps of Riga they were the worst team I've seen us play in Europa and I wouldn't even be surprised if they knocked us out next week :-/
Very accurate summary of the game by Burnsie above.
I thought this was one of Treacy's better performances however. Admittedly he played a wayward pass or two but that can be said for every Pats player - very sloppy and wasteful overall, against a side that were there to be hammered. He's def a stone or 2 overweight but showed a few touches of class today and a fair bit of effort.
A win is a win, especially in Europe. Don't knock it.
Ah, it's not quite that bad. There's some decent craft around these days. Íslenski Barinn in Reykjavík is probably the best spot for decent beer, bang in the centre of town too. They also sell hákarl, the putrefied shark stuff. Worth a try.
Beers are generally €6-7, though you'll pay more in the centre of Reykjavík. You could do worse than lifting a few tins (and maybe a whiskey or two) at Dublin or Keflavík airport though.
Regarding Windsor Park, you'd likely be able to buy a ticket on the day and walk through the away entrance. They aren't that strict when it came to any IL game I was at.
Their first win in 9 games and first clean sheet in 11 games in Europe
They're also off a 3 game losing streak which included a 4-0 loss away to Bohs.
Pats started brightly and deservedly lead at the half. Could and should have been more. In the second half they clearly prioritised keeping a clean sheet and just about got that. No doubt they'll need to up their performance significantly next Tuesday but they're in a good position to advance
Unless your full back gets sent off after half an hour.
Is the City v Linfield game on TV ?
