Merino seems like a different type of midfielder, is only 21 and it's only a loan deal. Can't imagine it would lessen their desire to sign McCarthy too much if they're serious about him.
Still odds on to go to Newcastle. Rafa was at Liverpool when he had trials there over 10 years ago.

I'll have 10c e/w on Swansea,
outside bet I know but seeing as our Gylfi looks to be on his way to Everton, a bit of quid pro quo might be on the table (a loan deal).
He wasn't involved last night in their EL league game. Leicester mightn't be a bad shout either, they're getting into the habit of splashing their cash, having shelled out 25m for young Ineacho from City, and not properly replaced Kante (not suggesting James will do that either).
What about a bold move to Southampton?
Silence surrounding McCarthy's future is deafening. Not a word from Koeman or anyone at the club.
All we're hearing (since a few weeks ago) is that Newcastle were interested and Leicester were, but are not anymore.
Would really love for him to get sorted asap.
He'll be needed for the double header in three weeks time.
Koeman is still managing his fitness, concerned about his knee (was it not groin pre-summer?) and explains why he wasn't included in final warm up game against Sevilla. - http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport...ennon-13440096

I think he will stay at Everton.
I doubt he will ever be injury free, sometimes you just needs to well.... i mean if you are fully fit your can't skip....
I mean maybe the injury thing will prevent a move to Newcastle or maybe cause it?
Who knows? Not me? But the man who sold the world?
Gareth Barry seems to be on the verge of joining West Brom. One less player for McCarthy to worry about if he stays.

Maybe a loan to a championship club might be useful. Some regular game time and more than hold his own at that level.
Are u drunk? He is a real good player. Germany and Bosnia two of our biggest results ever, he was unreal in those ganes. I can think of 6 prem clubs who he could sign for and do well. His issues is injury and his relationship with Ronald
I wonder would Celtic have a look at him? Champions League football on offer.
They seem to be well covered in midfield though.
He has a strange relationship with Koeman for sure but I'm pretty sure he rates him at least. I remember him pointing to McCarthy's injury as a reason the Merseyside derby swung in Liverpool's favour last season, and praised him after the 2-1 win against Arsenal too. Everton look odds on to make the Europa group stages now so he will surely get opportunities if he can get fit. Besic returned from injury last night though which won't help.
might be returning soon for Everton: https://twitter.com/EvertonBlueArmy/...10522628456449

RK: "We have the same players available tomorrow as we did on the weekend. James McCarthy may be available for next weekend."
First semi-positive news in a long time!
I feel a Koeman vs O'Neill row brewing....
Is Koeman starting to be found out?
Yeah think you are right Charles. Expectations from everton fans were way off theark re making top four winning trophies because they bought so many players. They won't do as well as last year because of the obvious fact that lukaku won them so many games against the middle lower Prem clubs and they have nobody remotely in his class now and the players he brought in including sigurdson and klassen r good mid top league players but not that step up in class everton fans wood have u believe. Barkley to my mind is better than either of them yet koeman has let that relationship deteriorate. McCarthy schniderlin and geuye is the midfield three they need to be competitive
At least he's willing to look in the mirror - http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/41274916
Hopefully this poor run can work out well for McCarthy on his return.
Not looking too promising for McCarthy: http://www.bbc.com/sport/live/41411858

James McCarthy injury latest
Republic of Ireland midfielder working his way back
Ronald Koeman explained the latest on Everton's James McCarthy's protracted fitness battle.
He said: “His situation is, what I heard from the doctor, he can be part of the team for training on Friday. But his last game was July.
“I think that is the answer for you.”
He doesn't sound too convinced there.
'Everton must come first' - Koeman warns McCarthy after latest Ireland call up
http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport...oeman-13683919
though if you read what he said it's softer than the headline suggests...
I wouldn’t blame Everton on this . If James can be got fit then he has to take every precaution necessary . If he doesn’t soon show that he can remain fit for an extended period of time then his football career itself will be coming under pressure .
They're very reasonable comments alright. Back to full training tomorrow, it might be mutually beneficial to play him against Moldova? Two games in four days is probably asking way too much though.
Koeman is delusional. McCarthy for me starts in Cardiff to give us a chance to win it's not ideal for us but when you are coming back from injury at some point you have to play matches so half hour against Moldova sets him up for Wales. Koeman needs to worry about the horrible performances everTon have been putting in. I wonder could ancellotti make everton the big club they do desperately want to be?
I'd go with the same midfield as Serbia. Meyler is not as talented as McCarthy but he was better in that game than McCarthy has been in the entire campaign for Ireland.
The entire two matches he played you mean?
Think Meyler's perfromance was over-egged a little. He was energetic but gave the ball away a lot, Whelan would quite possibly have been slated for such a performance. I do like Meyler though, but see him as more of a utility man to be honest.
I don't think it's practical to throw McCarthy in against Wales, but maybe we're past the point of being practical.
I thought he'd played three but, yeah, that's the sample size we've got. I thought Meyler gave the ball away a few times but it happened picking passes Whelan would have shied away from.
Afair, Charlie, you've always had a benevolent overview of Meyler's prowess on the pitch.
He is my son.
That might well explain his dodgy knee history.
i didn't realise he's out of the upcoming games. at least his article states as much:
http://www.independent.ie/sport/socc...-36184748.html
I don't think that's been confirmed, although it does seem inevitable. Mr. Young seems to want to come across as somebody 'in the know' and maybe he is, but I'm sceptical.
