Think the stick Sammon gets is a bit unfair. He's as good an option as Walters and Cox.

I remember Ireland losing to Kazakhstan until Long and Doyle came on for Cox and Walters, ironically enough. And Walters being at fault for the Alaba goal in Dublin too. And being completely ineffective while keeping better players like Brady, Long and McClean out of the team. But he seems to be immune from any kind of criticism?
Sammon has played a combined total of about 240 minutes for Ireland. It's not really enough time to make a definitive judgment on his abilities. He even got a couple of assists, almost scored against Spain and showed signs of decent link up with Keane.
If Cox or Walters were setting the world on fire I would understand but they have played over 60 games for Ireland between them and have been pretty poor and they became regulars around the time the malaise in the Trap era set in.

Has anybody here watched a full Derby game since McLaren took over? I'd agree that Sammon isn't a PL striker, or anywhere near it really. He's very much a Derby sub these times barring injuries, but good to see him contribution when he gets a chance. I'd wouldn't be as dismissive as botn in relation to his Ireland prospects though, he wouldn't be anywhere near my first choice but I really don't see anything substantially better about Simon Cox I don't think, and is possibly on a par with Kevin Doyle right now.
McClaren is enjoying his honeymoon period at Derby at the moment, he didn't really have one at Forest, it pretty much started in divorce.
Remains to be seen how long it will last, but they are the form team in the division at the moment.
Funny how the fortunes of a manager change he looked like a complete idiot at Forest!

Sammon makes his second start this season. The 27 other appearances have all came from the bench.
Forde is being linked with Celtic as a replacement for Forster as it's looking more and more likely that the latter will leave this summer to boost his International aspirations.

Thought he might move over the summer actually. Did he get something like two starts last season?

Sammon was a decent foil for Keane in the limited game time he got for Ireland. He even got a couple of assists, didn't he?
I wouldn't have him in the team by any means but I think his uselessness is greatly exaggerated.
He was awful against Austria and I really hold it against Trap for persisting with him, but he laid two on a plate for Keane against Faroes I think.
Off the mark with Ipswich, putting them 2-0 up in Wigan.
The trouble with Sammon is his natural instinct is to avoid nets.

If people still don't understand what managers see in Conor, then look at the build up to his goal. He mightn't have a great goal ratio but he opens up space for other players.
In fairness to him, his first touch for that goal was spot on too. The through ball wasn't exactly a great one and, although he was fortunate that the keeper gave him a second change, he had a fair deal of work to do to convert that.
He did well in that instance, but let's not get carried away here. He did take his goal very well, good determination and deserved the luck he got.Quote:
