Just an update:

Both O�Hara and Wilson have earned rave reviews from Portsmouth fans, despite the dire circumstances surrounding Pompey�s season, and it is likely that both men will be included in Trapattoni�s next squad.

�I don't know what's going on at the moment because nobody has said anything to me,� said O�Hara, who was top of Terry Venables� list of potential recruits when he was tipped as the next Irish manager.

Not a good start there.

Its up to O'Hara to approach the FAI about his availability not the other way around. Waiting around on the off chance you'll be asked doesn't exactly suggest a burning desire to be involved.

I know what you mean about showing your desire to play, but I don't think that it's the player's job to approach any respective association about playing. Football associations have people there to do a job and that includes finding and approaching the best players who are available and eligible.

Understood - but there's ways and means of conveying your eligibility in an unofficial capacity rather than stating to the media that noone has effectively made him an offer akin to a club move.

I'm not overly precious about eligibility - but some are - and not too much ammunition is ever needed to rub the players nose in it.

I just think players that are genuinely interested in playing and have an affinity with playing for us need to box clever in relation to how they declare.

Kyle Naughton is regarded as one of the best young fullbacks in England. One day he will probably be good enough.

Phil Bardsley is a very competent fullback who would be good enough from a talent perspective to play for us. No clue on "how Irish" he is though...

from Ireland and committed himself to England, even though the player
claims he had been promised a full international cap under Giovanni
Trapattoni and a possible fast-track ticket to the World Cup finals.

Shelvey (17) is rated as one of the best young midfielders in England,
having made his debut for Chartlon last year at the age of 16. He also
made progress at international level, captaining the England U16s, but
the player also qualified for Ireland through a grandparent and was
the subject of an approach from the FAI, believed to have been from
Liam Brady. But in a blow to Irish hopes, the teenager says he's
sticking with England. "I had the chance to play for the Ireland first
team but I want to play for England," he said today.

Sorry mate, that may well be a valid quote from the Herald but it is absolute tripe and hasn't happened. I won't tell you my source but those who know me on here will know I've yet to be proven wrong :D

Sorry, I meant to say he wasn't offered a full international cap. I mean even if you look at it logically, we've had McCarthy who was pulling up trees at Hamilton and linked with big clubs all the time and the temptation was resisted to give him a full cap!

This doesn't sit well with me I have to be honest. I was too young when the last big recruitment drive under Charlton happened so the likes of Townsend, Aldo etc signing up didn't have any impact on me, and I suppose that "Irish" question doesn't matter as much when you're a child. The balance to that was Aldo, Andy Townsend and the like probably weren't hanging on for full English honours.
People know that I appreciate the uniqueness of the Irish diaspora, and fully appreciate the contribution of 2g's and 3g's both on the terrace and on the pitch, but to be chasing Nolan, who's pretty much given us the two fingers over the past how many years doesn't sit well with me.
