watched the assasination of jesse james the other day
thought it was very good. slow and moody and the tension leading up to the assasination is class.
wouldnt go to a late showing tho as its quite a long film!
I also went to see this last week. 2 hrs 30 minutes but it flew by. Brad Pitt was excellent as Jesse James. Not your 'regular' western but if you like Mallick you'll love this.Quote:

Eventually got around to watching Downfall last night. Have to say it's a fantastic film. Just being back from a short holiday in Germany made it all the more moving.
Got me thinking about other subtitled films I'd recommend, I think they've been mentioned on here already, but two from my collection are Battle Royal and Brotherhood of the Wolf.
Talking about quality sub-titled fims, Das Boot comes to mind!

Good top 250 list here not too heavily weighed by modern films. Got to worry about no.2 so high though.

Any poll which is done over the internet in this format, where anybody can vote, even if they haven't seen all the movies on the list, or worse, there is no list, is terribly flawed.
Any list of "best" movies compiled by professional movie critics is always very different from one compiled by "layviewers".
I'm not saying the list compiled by the pro's is always more accurate, but it would be compiled by more experienced and knowledgeable movie-watchers. I'd trust it.
It's like those polls of football teams to find the best ever player, and the winner invariably played for that club within the last 10-15 years, because most of the voters don't remember many players older than that time.
EDIT: I'm not sure how the voting worked,as it shows both number of votes, and ranking. Seems somewhat unusual.
Judging the merits of films is subjective though , so no list can ever hope to be "accurate"Quote:

I think it isn't unreasonable to say that there are people who have studied film, are aware of techniques used in films, who understand processes which happen in films, and who can understand how certain things which happen on screen are reflections of work done behind the camera. If a group of such people got together and created a list of criteria which was broad enough to cover every kind of film, and based on those criteria they agreed upon a list of films they felt, as objectively as possible, to be the best films ever, I'd trust it more than this thread, for example.
Good to see Memento in the top 50! Not too sure about the LOTR movies placed above classics such as Taxi Driver, Apoc Now and Raging bull but that is just my opinion.
