I couldn't care about Long's background. The fact of the matter is he has scored 3 goals for Ireland. To be perfectly honest I can't even remember his first Ireland goal but his 2 on Wednesday night were certainly not "fortunate". Why would you want to say his goals were lucky? I don't get it. You sound like Celtic fans going on about Kris Boyd. Every goal he scores is apparently lucky. But that's Celtic and Rangers. This is one of our own players scoring goals. Stop being biased towards certain players and support them all.

First goal - He was in the right place at the right time and that's what you want from a striker.
Second goal - Class play in my opinion. He made a simple pass from McGeady look superb.

I play striker, if I had been given either of those chances I would consider myself very fortunate, usually the goal doesn't just present itself

They didn't. As you said to eirebhoy look at the goals again.

First goal- he reacted quickest. Anticipation is a key attribute of being a striker. Compare where he was when the keeper parried it and then where he was when he finished- about 10 yards of a gap.

Second goal- he used his strength to turn the defender and stayed composed and finished. He has the attributes to become a great striker.

Again, I agree he could be a great striker, also again, if I found myself in either of those positions I would consider myself fortunate more than that we deserved it. Sometimes the balls fall for you, sometimes they don't

Sometimes you have to make use of the balls played to you
Any number of Sunday league players could have received the same ball from McGeady for the 4th goal and put it into the stands. On the other hand, Long controlled it, held off his marker, played the ball into space for himself and finished well.

Positional sense is one of the most important attributes in a striker. People used to say Kenny Miller played well for Celtic but the midfield wasn't creating the chances. If he was in the positions to score the chances would have been created.

I heard Jim McLoughlin say that given the choice he would choose a central partnership of Dunne and O'Shea for the upcoming games.
He put a high value on that they know each others play better or complement each other better.
It's interesting when you hear a highly respected man like McLoughlin give his viewpoints contradicting what most fans first choice centre half partnership would be.

I don't though :(. To be honest, I probably wouldn't have finished it, but any striker playing in college here or above anywhere else in the world would have. I played a match yesterday, I will say it again, if I had found myself in either of those positions I would be fortunate, A.) the keeper would've help it or pushed it over and the defender wouldn't have let me in untouched. B.) No defender worth his **** would let a guy who weighs 70 kgs muscle them off or not be between them and the goal when McGeady is going away from goal on his left foot? I've been playing twice a day for 2 weeks, if I don't understand it I must be pretty thick (which is certainly possible). I'll try to put my words in context more. Long scored two goals (that I consider fortunate) with that, along with the fact we beat a terrible team (on that night) 4 - 0, don't just assume we'll tear it up in Eastern Europe in 2 weeks or that Long will be the next Keane.

He was my choice for manager when Jack got the job.

I think McShane's been a breath of fresh air to the squad but I'd be happy with the back 4 that started against Denmark.

I think Carr's injury means that's not going to happen so McShane will start but while he brings a attitude that sets example there's always a nagging fear that he'll do something rash, just as you always fear that O'Shea will do something careless.

couldn't agree more with that post, particularly the last point. I have to say looking at the highlights of the liverpool game, mcshane to me at least, appeared out of position alot.
