I thought lightning was a common occurrence in Bolivia Ruben? At least that's how my lads explained the apparent failure of this season's yield on my plantation anyway. Untrue? Swindlers?
I'm as annoyed as Chippy was with Dunphy earlier!

RTE speech before picture is common just not their fault this time. BBC stuck with radio commentary possibly in attempt to match it up. I can never remember 3 interruptions in a match & to do it in Euro semi final is unacceptable. Last time they get big match in their poxy small stadiums.
To quote Larry David:
RTE might be entertainment but it is more reality tv than sports now. Dunphy has become like a little englander (no offence meant English people). He now tries to win arguments by shouting the loudest & seems to think his opinion has credibility. Only a matter of time before he has fight with Brady regarding Ireland.Quote:
Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate
Dunphy dismissed Germany because none of their players (except for Ballack) played for "big clubs". Obviously he was unaware of Russia or Turkey squads. Is it my imagination or did he criticise Portugal after they were beaten by Germans suggesting Germans a proper team?
Pete doesn't do jokes, it's genetic.
Sounds like the lid fell off again
Why do you think it was the fault of the Swiss, Pete?
Well the match was played in Switzerland, I know the problem was alledgely in Vienna (were the "media city" is), but to be honest they should have backup systems to send pictures out direct from Basel. The picture black out apparently happend all across Europe, once it happend for the 1st time there should have been systems in place to stop it happening again.
As I type this I am watching a game from Quito which is coming through fine via the web. If I can get pictures from Ecuador how come no one could get them from Switzerland about 1/10 of the distance and a supposedly developed country.
Had a visitor in last night and had to turn the sound down and look at it out of the corner of my eye. There seemed to be a rare difference of opinion between the clown and Father Time at the end of the game (with Chippy staying mute) and the clown seemed to be getting agitated. What was all that about ? Didn't see Bill laughing as much either!!
Swiss TV had pictures because they were able to tap into live feed from stadiums. They gave the Germans those pictures too. Seems like they only had a local back up plan.
That's guaranteed. Only question is when. This is the guy who thinks he's the great analyst, saying what lesser pundits fear to say, caling it like it is, etc, etc, etc. What rubbish. Watched a little bit of Hansen and O'Neill on BBC (ignored Shearer) They were saying similar things(i.e sensible) to Brady and Giles. Germany clearly not a great side, but they have a knack of getting the job done, which you just can't dismiss. Only a fool (Humpty Dunphy) would write off their chances in the final.
There have been some stupid
stereotypical barbs against the Swiss, all very ironic considering that Ireland is the infrastructure backwater of western europe, about 50 years behind and with a culture of ineptitude.
I am far from an expert in tv coverage matters but I assume that UEFA are responsible for policy decisions made about TV coverage and matters of back up.
Bottom line, you organise a tournament, you ensure that you have the means to deliver it. I remember all the tension about would Athens be ready to host the Olympics, it was a close run thing but in the end they did it. Last night the Swiss were caught slipping again. I've been watching football for the last two decades and I've never witnessed such a farce in terms of TV at a major competition. USA 94, Italia 90, Japan/Korea 02, Germany 06, Portugal 04... nothing like this happened there.
It's pretty ****ing basic, people should be able to watch a semi final of a tournament on TV. One or two glitches are fine but most of the second half was cut off. Like I say the Copa Libertadores was viewable live from Ecuador last night, they have nothing like the budget that the Swiss have. To put this into a bit of perspective the total prize fund of the Libertadores is $2.4m (USD), I would wager that the head of the Swiss organising committee probably pockets more than that for Euro 2008.
You can go on about our inadequate infrastructure all you want, but at the end of the day, it's the Swiss - not us - who were running the show last night. They dropped the ball. They were not prepared... but yeah happily for them they were able to watch all of the match on their TVs.
What part did you not understand? UEFA are responsible for the decisions taken with the TV coverage. UEFA media technology is responsible for getting the feed out to the masses.
What next? blame the Swiss for the referee last night:rolleyes:
You never watched Mexico '86 then, and their frequent breakdowns.Quote:

The host country should have relevant back up systems in place. They are hosting the tournament they should have the means to broadcast it. Yes it was a mess up by UEFA, but the Swiss are also responsible. Other people in this thread have confirmed they were able to get pictures out to the whole of their country and it seems the Swiss piped the images to Germany too. Audio was also transmitted from Basel (Radio 5 had constant commentary). Basel was the main Swiss location for this tournament, between last nights broadcasting issues and having to import a new pitch... It's all very shoddy.
Well I was 3-4 years old so I dont remember too much of that. Technology has advanced a lot in the 22 years since.
thats not so true
the BBC panel all got it totally wrong last night.
hansen with his Ballack player of tourna rubbish, and how Turkey were going to shut up shop
I thought the RTe guys had it spot on. Turkey should have and so nearly did pull off a result
If turkey won last night what would all ye guys be spouting today?
That german team is rubbish, so what if they are in the final
No team that makes a European final is rubbish. This German team is by no means their best historically but they have some good individuals and are a decent unit. If such a rubbish team went on to win the competition, what does that say about the rest of Europe?
If the Germans tv system got hit by lightening 3 times, momentarily cutting out the signal and the whole system had to reboot, you would still blame the Swiss:rolleyes:
The Swiss have nothing to do with UEFA Media Technology and the Swiss responsibility for that depends upon the extent of their membership of UEFA, just like any other member nation..
The Swiss broadcasting feeds were perfect
UEFA Media
'For the first time in EURO history, UEFA will produce the television signal for the tournament itself through its subsidiary UEFA Media Technologies SA. As host broadcaster, UEFA Media Technologies will be responsible for the transmission of TV pictures from UEFA EURO 2008™. Over 2,000 people will be involved in Host Broadcast Operations at the IBC and the venues, and over sites such as the team training camps during a four-week period'.
While there have been some great football matches & the play has generally been attacking if Ireland were in this there would be lots of complaints about lack of tickets. The biggest Swiss stadium is barely 40k where as at least the Austrians have 50k in Vienna. There has already been criticism of the organisation that sees only 2 stadiums (Basle & Vienna) used for the entire knock out phase - not so much a tournament held in 2 countries but 2 cities.
Lets face it the Swiss would never have got this if Uefa & Fifa did not have their HQs there.
Before anyone had a go Irelands infrastructure is worse.
