Connacht Junior Cup & Shield
The Connacht Junior Cup commences with the 1st Round on 26th September, the second round is fixed for the 17th October with the 3rd Round on 28th November. The Super League Clubs enter the competition at the 3rd Round stage.
For the first time the C.F.A. are introducing a Shield competition for teams knocked out on the 1st Round, subsequent rounds of the shield competition will be played on the same day as the cup competition rounds. The final of the shield competition will precede the cup competition final next April. It was decided at the last meeting of the Connacht Junior Committee that all cup and shield matches will be played on Sunday's, the only exception to this is where 2 Clubs agree to play on Saturday following consultation with the local Fixtures Secretary.
Cheers for the info and link to the draw, it looks like all the Super League teams are at home in round 3.
Heard a few rumblings that clubs would fancy their chances in the Shield competition and not care about progression from the 1st round. Could this mean that teams underpreform in order to increase their chances of picking up some silverware as opposed to giving their all in the 1st round. Would it not be better for all clubs to enter at this stage if this was to become a trend? Or will this shield prove to be a complete farce if teams opt to concentrate on having a big day out with the the Connaught cup proper finalists. Because lets be fair it would be more appealing to get to the Shield final than come up against a SL team in R3 and be knocked out at that stage???
Valid point Back n the Game, there are 36 first round games, which mean that there'll only be 36 teams in the shield. I'd imagine 28 teams will get a bye to the round of the last 32 and the remaining 8 teams will play a preliminary round.
If you lose in the 1st round of the cup and manage to dodge the preliminary round 3 wins will get you to the Shield semis.
A few years back my club won 4 games and got Castlebar(pre going LOI 'A'), got hockeyed and never had a chance. but if you were to win 3/4 games in the Shield you are looking at a semi or possibly a final.
Can see a lot of the better div 1 clubs trying that route alright, 4/5 wins against non SL teams and you have a Connacht Trophy to parade around your area.
Would make more sense to have all the teams in an open draw for 1st on Connacht Cup, losers go into the Shield, that way some of the weaker SL teams could have a chance in the Shield too(thats the way the under age Conn cups are ran)
Yes very good point maybe a solution for next season would be the Round 1 loosers would play each others with the winners playing Round 2 loosers and then the winners would play the Round 3 loosers, i know it would mean an extra round in the shield but it would mean the shield wiuld be more competative.
Dont think that would be the answer as the whole concept for the shield is to give weaker sides in Connaught a chance to win a connaught title for want of a better word. If you had all the SL sides in from the start like the FAI junior cup then the chance of some of them getting knocked out earlier would encourage every other team to keep interest in the main competition. I just think it should be an open competition from the start
I reckon these are the strongest Sligo/Leitrim sides who have got drawn to a team from another league in round 1. Merville Utd, Coolera Rovers, Quayside Rovers and Leitrim Villa.
Kilshanvey Utd v Merville
Ballyglass v Coolera
Quayside v Ballyvary BB
Leitrim Villa v Medtronic
Any idea of the strength of the opposition they have drawn?? Didnt Ballyglass make the FAI Junior semis 10 years back??
Its a loose loose situation. The bigger sides know with the current format that they have a sure fire short cut to the latter stages. I feel that if they were in the mix from the start they would'nt have such an easy ride and some of the weeker SL sides should be entitled to enter the shield competition. The thought of cup upsets would provide a platform for decent sides outside the top flight to genuinely contest the earlier rounds and if some of the top sides end up in the shield then so be it. The mere fact that they end up in the shield doesn't suggest for 1 second that they would win but I suspect it would have an adverse effect as some of those sides would not field strong teams in a lesser competition.
Does anyone have the full draw, 3rd round and further are blank, dont they normally do the complete draw from round on to final in one go???
9 Mayo sides drop into the shield from the 24 participating on Sunday.
Ballyvary BB, K/K Utd, Ballina Utd, Moy Villa, Urlar, Mulranny, Ballinrobe, Cross Celtic and Hollister.
No Major shocks apart from Parksides extratime win over Colga and Moy Villa's hiding after dumping swinford out of the FAI the previous week. Good Showing from the Mayo Clubs by all accounts given that from the 9 teams eliminated 3 were beaten by Mayo sides (Urlar, Ballina Utd and Mulranny)
8 sligo sides drop to shield too, Western Rovers, Dromore Villa, Cloonamahon Celtic, Glenview, MCR all lost, looks like Merville, Grange and Gurteen gave walkovers
Looks like lots of walk overs given in the 1st round, think Achill and Kilalla got free passes too. What does that say about the interest in the cup or the shield
Doesn't make any sence to me. If it was Mayo Clubs giving w/o then you would understand as they will have very little football in between games. But it's clubs just starting their seasons and have the oppertunity to give their players more football that seem to be lying down.
I presume that the 3 Sligo clubs I mentioned gave the walkover as they are the away team and it reads, Home Team w/o Away Team on the Aertel page. I'd imagine that Gurteen didnt travel as they had the GAA County final this weekend.
As far as I'm aware in the schoolboys Con Cup if you dont fulfill your cup fixture you cant enter the shield, I wonder will this apply to the Junior version
The rules says that any club who did not enter or failed to fullfill the opening fixture will not be alowed into the shield. The qestion is why did they enter the competation in the first place. It also means the clubs that recieved walkovers can't now go into the sheild.
Merville were down as winning 2-0 away from home on the Galway Aertel page, on the Sligo Aertel page it read w/o.
although if they could get rid of 4 teams it would leave 32 in the shield, no need for byes, preliminary rounds etc.
breakdown of teams into the shield is as follows:
Sligo/Leitrim - 3 Prem teams, 4 div 1 teams = 7 teams
Galway - 2 div 1, 2 div 2, 3 div 3, 1 div4a, 2 div 4b = 10 teams, *allowing for Bohs and Tuam wins
Mayo - 2 prem, 4 div 1, 2 div 2, 2 div 3 = 10 teams
Roscommon - 6 div 1, 2 div 2, 1 div 3 = 9 teams
Anyone got any tips for the Shield??? I cant see any of the Sligo teams in the shield progressing very far, unless they get a very favouable draw...
Are Ballyglass not in the Mayo Premier league?

Are Ballyglass not in the Mayo Premier league?
Yes they are but acording to the Mayo league website they won 2-1
http://inform.fai.ie/League/Clubs/po...ksResults.aspx
here is the link to the results posted on the Mayo league web site, where did you see the other results. Seems to be some confusion over some of the results and conflicting victors on the 3 different county sites. Is there anywhere that all the resuts are posted from all counties. Just checked the "viewfromthetouchline" site in Roscomon too and its got results from all counties and again no consistency as it shows Achill winning 2-0 on the Mayo link and 3-0 on other links, same for Kilalla.
