Best Album of...1991

Might not be able to put this up tomorrow so I'll do it tonight. Stone Roses were the clear winners in the 1989 poll (probably shouldn't have even bothered with a poll to be honest :p), but the 1990 poll is looking slightly unpredictable. Anyway here are you picks for 1991, usual rule of posting who you are voting for if you vote other applies. As two new features I'm gonna include a youtube video of each nominated artist/group and some music news from that year. If you're nominating someone not on the list and want to throw up a youtube video to try and garner more votes for your chosen group than limit it to one video for the artist.

Hard cuts to make this year. Some of the albums that nearly made it were Red Hot Chilli Peppers BloodSugarSexMagik, Smashing Pumpkins Gish, Lenny Kravitz Mama Said, Michael Jackson Dangerous, Guns N Roses Use Your Illusions 1+2, Soundgarden Badmotorfinger and Bonnie Raitt Luck of the Draw. Blur also made their debut this year. Very interesting times in music

February 27: James Brown is granted an early parole and released from jail. Brown had been arrested after leading police on a high speed chase through two states in 1989.

March 11: Janet Jackson signs a $30 million (US) contract with Virgin Records, making her the highest paid female recording artist ever.

March 20 : Michael Jackson signs a $1 billion contract with Sony.

March 27: New Kids on the Block's Donnie Wahlberg is arrested in Louisville, Kentucky for allegedly setting his hotel room on fire.

May 7:In Macon, Georgia, a judge dismisses a wrongful death lawsuit against Ozzy Osbourne. The suit was filed by a local couple that believed their son was inspired to attempt suicide by Osbourne's music.

September 17: Guns N' Roses release the albums Use Your Illusion I & II which debut at the two highest spots on the Billboard 200, the first such feat for a rock act.

September 24: Nirvana releases Nevermind, debuting at #144 on the Billboard 200.

September: Tupac Shakur's solo career begins with his first album, 2Pacalypse Now, however it does not do well. 6 year old Qa'id Walker is shot dead by a stray bullet during a confrontation between Tupac's entourage and a rival group.

November 24: Lead Singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury dies of AIDS at 45, just one day after he announces he has the disease.

Pearl Jam - Ten

quite possibly one of the best debut albums ever (right up there with Stone Roses actually)... each track is a classic.

Neds Atomic Dustbin - God Fodder - pure class.

Just realised what a great year for music 91' was and ended up voting for MBV.

Ice Cube - Death Certificate

One of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. His masterpiece, imo.

Fantastic year - probably the year a young Gav took notice of music. Went with Nirvana.

While I'm not that keen on the recorded version I do love this live one (Love Is Blindness from Achtung Baby)

Normally, Pixies' Trompe Le Monde album (very underrated) would be my choice but since that it's unlikely to garner any other votes I'll go for Pearl Jam's Ten. A great album, if not their best.

Hmm - tough one. I'm really torn here. Top 4 albums of 91 for me:

Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque
Elvis Costello - Mighty Like Rose
Billy Bragg - Don't Try This At Home.

I'll go with Teenage Fanclub. Just.

Have to go with Nevermind, before that I was listening to whatever drivel Atlantic 252 spewed out 3 times an hour. That all changed the first time I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Nevermind just about got my vote.

I played Blur's "Leisure" to death that Summer.

Again like some above I'd forgotten how good 1991 was for albums: Bandwagonesque, Nevermind, Screamadelica, Blue Lines, all could have won other years, there's also 'Spiderland' by Slint and 'Yerself Is Steam' by Mercury Rev, and I really really wanted to go for PM Dawn's 'Of The Heart, Of The Soul, Of The Cross... The Utopian Experience', but picked Loveless in the end, it's just genius.

Very tough choice this year, but in the end went with Nevermind. The first poll of death. :D

Went for Nirvana. Purely because that was the first real album I got into. It also changed my outlook on music. Was listening to purely whatever sh!te was on the radio round about that time. Music for me changed forever once I listened to it. Got into Screamedelica relatively late as with Blue Lines and Gish, a very close call, hence my vote is Nevermind. Poll of Death is right!

*Slaps head* How did I forget Bandwagonesque!!!! :(

And as if it wasn't group of Death enough, nobody has mentioned The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld yet.
Honourable mention also to Mudhoney's Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, and Throwing Muses - The Real Ramona.

I'm surprised Nevermind has built such a strong early lead to be honest, I've always thought of Nirvana as a very over-rated band and actually had high hopes for them getting shown up here by the likes of Primal Scream and My Bloody Valentine

I was never the kid with the Kurt Cobain poster on my wall and Nirvana biro'd onto my schoolbag, but it is just a great album.
