I think its a great idea, its cheap , it slows people down and the cardboard cops dont issue tickets or points.
BTW: I have seen a new low, the last few mornings the cops have been pulling cars on the northbound approach to the port tunnel as the cars are slowing down anyway , this is in addition to the white van with a camera pointing out the back window which seems to be permanently parked on under the bridges in the 80k zone on the M1 between the tunnel and the ariport this must be a great cash cow as it certanly doesnt slow many people down.
Its been done in Canada and its been a success.
They do it here in Florida on the interstates. Real unoccupied police car , facing oncoming traffic at a slight angle. Sometimes they'll have a mannequin in it. It certainly slows people down.
I'd say you would've slowed down by then though. I don't mind anything that appears to be visible policing - it's the sneaky hide behind the hedge to catch people nonsense (as londonred outlines) that annoys me. Prevention much better than convictions. Same as with drink driving - they should be hitting the pub and club car parks before people get into cars, or setting up at the car park exits.
I agree with everything you say in your post macy. has the lack of Garda resources hit such a critical level that we now have cardbord cut-outs instead of real coppers
Pity they don't focus much on public order.
How long are they going to last before they're smashed to pieces? Or defaced in some way? Drunk folk will be nicking them and putting them in the neighbour's garden for a laugh. I'd love to be there to be part of it.
Was thinking the same myself, how long before theres one on every student accommodation Wall in the country
Maybe Dublin City Council will get cardboard cutout Gardai for the streets?
Kildare County Council are some idiots. I love the quote where they defend them by saying they are not cardboard but wooden as if that makes a difference.
Speeding fines are all about revenue generation, always have & always will be. Amazing how every new Minister for Justice denies it but any Guard will tell you they have quotes for fines.
