Nearly like a proper football system

I have to say this new signing is nearly like a proper football system in action, the kind that you see in every other country with the appointment of Kenna. An ex-Ireland International player coming back into the domestic system, y'know .... like you see happening all over Europe. Ex-players giving something back to the home game.

To be fair there weren't many high profile jobs in this country in the past but with clubs going full time there is an industry evolving where people can get gainful employment here. Good to see, hopefully more it, we'll see.

Did you ever think we'd see the likes of it?

I don't really see the point of that thread to be honest, well, I don't agree with your reading of the situation.

I'm sure Jeff doesn't see it as "giving something back".

I don't have a problem with his appointment, but I imagine from Kenna's perspective, he is looking for a way into management, and it may have been easier to get a decent job in Ireland than in England.

I just think that it remains to be seen if he will have the impact on the team that everybody hopes.

He was an great player, but that doesn't automatically make you a manager.
It would be true to say that people who play at the highest level are more likely to make good managers, but it is definitely not a cert that they would be.

I'm not questioning Kenna's motives either. I hear that his salary will be strongly weighted toward being performance related.

Just my opinion.

If Kenna is a success he will be gone as soon as an opportunity arises. There is no "giving back" element here.

If he is a success, hopefully he will attract more people to playing or managing here. Thus we will have a bigger pool of players and managers to choose from, clubs will no longer have to pay over inflated wages to a few club hopping managers/players who are paid way beyond what they are worth because ther is no alternative. If anybody is a success here player or manager they won't be around for long.

Agreed. Success is good for fans but ultimately may mean losing best players.

But thats going to happen anyway. Its just up to the clubs to nail down contracts properly and not let the manager handle them.

I know there is a mercenary element to it but not all the time. There is also the angle of a player being able to return here and make a living from the game. That is a good option to have available to them, being closer to family etc.

The more professional the league gets, the more we'll see it and managers will have to perform if they want to progress themselves. Again, nail down the contract and dont get caught out and its all good. What is the average life cycle of a manager at a club anywy, three years? It doesn't matter where they come from just as long as they do a job. If he is an ex-international then its an added bonus.

Two words.

Gareth Farrelly.

Of course Kenna could go the other way but it's a fairly substantial risk to be taking.

Lets face it the Galway board have rolled the dice and none of us know what is going to happen , but I am sure we all will know in a couple of weeks time one way or the other that's for sure .......

That's what I can't get my head around though. Of all the clubs in this league of has beens and never wases surely Galway of them all had no need to take such a risk? :confused: (On an aside it displeases me to have to be even that positive about GUFC so don't expect it to become a habit.

I mean if it was us taking a gamble on an unknown there'd be more logic to it. Farrelly was at least still in or around his prime with Bohs as a player. All that Jeff Kenna really has to bring to the table (thus far) is a name and his playing experience. I just think it's a strange appointment.
