Set Piece Dividends

Last night in Terryland the Ireland u17s scored twice and hit the crossbar once off three set pieces...They've qualified for the European Championship finals.:)

Last season Wes Charles scored three times off three set pieces. All 3 goals were part of three rare home victories.

The most successful Galway United League side scored a hatful of goals courtesy of Martin McDonnell's near post corners met by Denis Bonner.

Brian Kerr won a League with St. Pats's, who scored a huge proportion of their goals from set pieces.

Many supporters moaned about how Gareth Gorman ever got in a first team, but some managers felt he was worth his place for the high percentage of quality free kicks and corners he delivered.

Improving the quality of our set pieces must be addressed. There's a harvest of goals to be had for whoever has the will and determination to put in the work and the time on the training ground.

Nothing deflates me more in Terryland than a free kick or a corner that is just wasted.

I think he scored 5 in the 85/86 season when we finished 2nd in the league, hardly an earth shattering total, but agree with you, we need to be doing better from set pieces. Beating the first man with the ball in would be a nice start

it wasnt just Marty because you had John Mannion taking them from the other side and we we did score a hell of a lot of goals off set pieces in those years.

Including a direct goal from Mags against UCD in 86.
I'll always remember it was it was the first time I had seen that - he took a corner at the waterworks end and in it went! So he wasn't too shoddy with set piece deliveries, the legend

Have to agree with you here.

What would be wrong with having an extra hour session maybe two afternoons a week to do exclusively set pieces. it could well earn an extra 10 or 12 points a season!!

Under previous part-time regimes we seemed to score far more goals from set pieces so why not now when we are full-time?

What about the goal Billy scored from a free kick his own half 2/3 years ago againist Cobh . Now I know he menat it to be a kick into the box but it was good to see the surprise on his face with what could be discribed as a gale asissted kick .

A LOT of goals come from set-pieces I'd like to see united score more from them. Better crosses are essential.

Hes put in 1 or 2 good crosses so far from what i seen.At least hes clearing the first defender from corners which is more then Lester does.
