FAI anounce Prize Money

FAI have announced the prize money for the 2008 season

18% increase on last year.
Premier Division champions to receive EUR 250,000 in prize money.

Chairman of the FAI National League Executive Committee, Eamonn Naughton, said:

“The FAI’s total investment in the Eircom League of Ireland this season will be €5million and €2million of that sum will go directly to the clubs in the form of prize-money, television payments, European participation grants, contributions to Club Promotions Officers and subsidies in relation to insurance and certain match day costs.

“Other money will be spent on a marketing campaign which will focus on radio and television while the intangible benefits of the FAI’s involvement include the administration of the League by Director Fran Gavin and his team, club licensing and access to FAI personnel for advice and help in areas such as facilities, marketing, sponsorship, communications and legal matters.”

Very cheeky of FAI to claim that the money coming from UEFA and the Setanta cup as their own money.

And we will need it too. Our out goings for the season are expected to be around �1M. :)

In fairness its serious money. We made �635K from winning the league and Setanta cup last season (including the guaranteed �260k from the CL)

I like the part about the clubs getting TV money. I wonder did RTE have a bit of a think after they were told to bugger off when they tried to broadcast the UEFA cup match against Libertas as they wouldn't give us any money

Fair play to your board for that by the way. It shows we wont be bullied. They were joking themselves if they wanted the rights to those UEFA cup matches for free.

Yes this debate was discussed within football through 2006. An agreement was reached, where at least prize money is weighted towards the teams near the top, and those who are successful in the cup competitions.

As they tend to be the same teams, there was a concern at the time that some clubs would start to move away from the pack, funded by the FAI.
Reverting to a ten team top Division can also be measured as facilitating the few.

However the League has expanded to four Divisions of varying talents and the talent within at least the top two divisions is rather Concertinered down the table. (Teams grouped together and then large points gap to one or two others further gaps and then more clubs together).

It is also inflationary as an individual club, in the Premier Division, must match EUR 15,000 from FAI to pay for the salary for a Community Promotions Officer (CPO), however the value that a CPO brings to a club is expected to be far greater.

But there are other funds available, the Govt provides funding to sports clubs for specific projects.

But these monies are based on the project applied for, in the recent past funds were delayed to all eircom League clubs because it was shown that some clubs used SCG money to pay the wages of players. Domestic football is at a disadvantage of other sports 'cos we renumerate our players for their efforts.

The FAI has come to athe assistance of league clubs and their grounds in the past, Utd. Park, Buckley Park and Dalymount Park (HoIF).

The football debate about providing for the playing staff, crowds roll in and then upgrade accomodation. Or get the accomodation right first then let the team follow, will continue in Ireland.
In practice the team and ground roll along together.

But there are notable expectations in both arguments.

Regarding the predictablable complaints after large monies going to football are announce, it reminds me of the song 'Complain' in "Bob Roberts" film.

And no I don't believe you are standing up for youor entitlements when you make derogatory remarks when prize money is handed out.
