Marney faces three-week lay-off

St Patrick’s Athletic midfielder Paul Marney faces three weeks on the sidelines after sustaining an ankle injury, while Davy Byrne is also on the easy list after suffering a back strain in an under-21 match at the weekend.

Byrne, who only signed for the Saints from Shelbourne in the close-season, missed six weeks of the season after an ankle injury in the game against Waterford United on the third weekend of the campaign.

He returned to fitness in recent weeks, and was taking part in the under-21 match against Mullingar Athletic last weekend in an attempt to improve his match fitness.

However, the knock is considered to be slight, and he is expected to be back in contention for a starting berth by the time the mid-season interval breaks ends in three weeks time.

Marney, on the other hand, could well miss St Pats’ next game, a home meeting with Waterford next Monday week, June 30th after sustaining an ankle injury.

On a brighter note, full back Trevor Croly, who was on the verge of signing for Shamrock Rovers in the close-season, has stepped up his recovery after undergoing an operation on a groin injury at the end of last season.

Croly put in a 70-minute stint in the under-21 outing against Mullingar, and is expected to challenge ex-Shels man Barry Prendeville for a place in Eamonn Collins’s first team in the coming weeks.
