After extra-time
The disappointing beginning to Bohemians’ season continued at Flancare park on Monday night as Longford Town edged into the last four of the competition courtesy of two goals from Paddy Mulvihill.
Underage international Mulvihill put Longford ahead in the first half and, after Robbie Doyle’s equaliser has brought the game to extra-time, he was on hand to fire the winner, four minutes from the end of the extra half-hour.
Both sides fielded slightly under-strength line-ups; Longford rested goalkeeper Stephen O’Brien and striker Eric Lavine among others, while Bohs boss Stephen Kenny gave a rare starts to promising youngster John Lester and second-choice goalkeeper Matt Gregg, as well as handing former Huddersfield Town man Thomas Heary his competitive debut.
Mulvihill, getting a chance to impress up front, seized the opportunity with both hands, heading past the despairing dive of Gregg after 12 minutes.
Just after the half-hour mark, former UCD striker Doyle found the net for the second successive game – he had also fired a late equaliser against Longford on his previous visit to Flancare at the beginning of the season.
The game ebbed and flowed, but neither side seemed ambitious enough to push forward in search of a winner. So, extra-time was required, and just four minutes from a penalty shoot-out, Mulvihill fired to the Bohs net to the delight of the home support.
