Quick Draw in Waterford (26.05.03 )

Longford Town got a draw at second placed Waterford United, two goals in the opening 15 minutes the reward for the evening. Longford were forced to take the field without Sean Francis, Brian Byrne and Tom Silke but their absence allowed the RSC to be lit up with dazzling talent of Shane Barrett and Gary Murphy.

Right from the off, Waterford started to impose themselves a dreadful finish from Alan Reilly denied Waterford the opener which eventually was to come from the feet of Darrel Murphy. Murphy walked past two Town defenders before stroking the ball into the net past a stranded Digger.

On the quarter, some nice work form Kirby resulted in an inviting cross from Barrett which Thomas Hughes could only divert past his own keeper when put under pressure by Eric Lavine.

The first half fizzled out and the second half proved to be costly for Town. Lavine was presented with a glorious opportunity ten minutes in but the Bajan wouldn't have finished his dinner at that time and the Waterford net remained intact.

Lavine certainly looked livelier in the RSC than he has done in the recent past. One wonders why? Francis absence can't be attributed to that! Shane Barrett still looks like he should be the only certainty in an attack which just isn't doing itself justice. The middle was relatively well controlled and Gary Murphy was a shining light. Kirby performed admirably and the central pairing of Keogh and Sheridan did alright. At times we were at sixes and sevens at the back and although McGovern is a powerful addition the exposure from the middle is frightening, solid games notably for Ferguson and Dillon whilst there wasn't anny of the erratic tackling we have come to expect from Avery... Digger played well but some of his distribution was unfortunate, probably due to the shorter pitch..

A point is a point but where Jimmy McGeogh get's his Longford played for a draw nonsense from I'll never know, Kieran Foley replaced Gary Murphy and we played the final 15mins 4-3-3, hardly defensive...[/COLOR][/FONT]
