A packed Regional Sports Centre saw Waterford Utd take all 3 points against Shamrock Rovers last night to move into second place in the table.

Thomas the Tank derails Rovers


Waterford United moved to second place in the eircom League Premier division with a 2-0 win over rivals Shamrock Rovers. A goal a piece for Thomas 'the tank' Hughes and Vinny Sullivan either side of the half for the blues in an action packed game at a packed RSC, gave the blues all 3 points.
Jason Colwell was sent off late in the first half for a clear elbow but that wasnt the only controversy on the night. A Thomas Hughes cross looked harmless as Byrne caught the ball on his line, but according to Eddie Foley, not usually a blues favourite, the ball had crossed the line leading to crazy scenes at the RSC, According to the Waterford at 8 cameraman situated beside the goal the ball had not crossed the line but try telling that to the crowd of over 4,000.

The game was played at a frantic pace with plenty of chances for both sides, but Vinny sealed the win when he beat the Rovers defense for pace and put a clinical finish past Byrne in the 53rd minute. So thats 25 goals now in 7 games for the most exciting team in the league, overall a polished performance from the blues, next up is Buckley Park on Monday night for the league Cup game against Kilkenny.

Another highlight from tonight was the performance of Brian Mallon, the Ferrybank man coming in for the suspended David Breen and possibly teaching neighbour John O'Shea, sitting in the main stand, a thing or too.

Is the Munster Senior Cup final on Sunday or Monday?

I think it is on the 25th of may wich is on next sunday at the cross.

It was fixed for Sunday the 25th at the cross, but at the last home two games it was announced as being on
Monday 26th @ 7:45.

Monday would probably suit both teams better with games being played the previous Friday, but to allow Waterford fans to travel in big numbers it would be better to have it on the Sunday evening.

WATERFORD INTO SECOND PLACE

Waterford United moved into second place in the table, two points behind leaders Shelbourne, when goals from Thomas Hughes and Vinny Sullivan gave them a deserved 2-0 victory over Shamrock Rovers to the delight of a packed 4,000 crowd at the RSC on Friday night.

A highly controversial goal after 30 minutes had Waterford in front when a cross by Hughes on the right allowed Rovers 'keeper Barry Ryan to clasp the ball to his chest and appear to lose control. To the fury of the Rovers players and supporters, the assistant referee adjudged that Ryan had stepped back over the line and awarded the goal.

A minute before the interval further calamity befell Rovers when midfielder Jason Colwell was shown the red card for an off the ball incident with Hughes. Inevitably with their numerical superiority, Waterford took control in the second half and stretched their lead on 53 minutes.

Richie Byrne's mistake put Vinny Sullivan in the clear and he kept his nerve to coolly drill the ball past the advancing Ryan. That made up for earlier misses by Kevin O'Brien and Gary O'Neill.

Rovers did have their chances notably through Shane Robinson and Tony Grant only for the Waterford defence to hold firm for a famous victory.

New to this board. But gotta say what a great result (again) on Friday night. nice big turn out too. So many things to cheer about (the goals, Josh taking his bow, De La Salle U-13's and the guy getting booked by John Q Law for taking a whizz in the first half!)
