COUNTY MONAGHAN GOLF SOCIETY CHALLENGE A MAJOR SUCCESS
The Monaghan United run County Monaghan Golf Society Challenge took place at Rossmore Golf Club last Saturday and was a runaway success. A total of 14 Golf Society teams took part including an FAI select team. The competition, sponsored by Moneycare, Monaghan was won by Terry’s Bar Golf Society and Master Deery’s came 2nd.
Monaghan United would like to thank MoneyCare, Rossmore Golf Club, all Tee Sponsors and everyone else who helped to make this the biggest golf tournament in Monaghan this year.
MONS SEW THE SEEDS OF FUTURE SUCCESS!
As Monaghan United FC continue to improve their facilities at Kingspan Century Park, the downside of the ongoing works is that the grass pitches at the rear of the Stadium are temporarily closed down due to sanding and seeding.
This will be strictly enforced and all training must be done on the Astro Parks. Please remember no blades, mouldies or studs allowed on Astro Park.
CONNOLLY CAPS IRELAND APPEARANCE WITH GOAL
Monaghan United’s protégé Mark Connolly capped his recent Republic of Ireland Under 17 appearances with a goal against Denmark as Ireland won the game 2-0. This was the 2nd game in a 3 game tournament to determine the make up of the Elite Phase of the UEFA qualifiers. Ireland, with the help of Connolly, now sit top of their group going into their game against Slovenia on Wednesday and have secured the much coveted place in the Elite Phase.
Sean McCaffery’s side have the service of some top up and coming players such as Conor Clifford (Chelsea), Aaron Doran (Blackburn Rovers) and Greg Cunningham (Manchester City) and the Clones defender is also a central part of McCaffery’s plans.
Congratulations to Mark on his first goal at this level.
MONAGHAN CELTIC U14’S SUFFER DEFEAT
Monaghan Celtic’s U 14 Team went down 4-3 to Glenmuir Celtic on Sunday last in the first game of the new season. The Mons were by far the better team with 3 goals from Conor Blacklock and were 2-0 up with just 20 minutes gone. Overall the Monaghan lads showed some great fighting spirit and played some very good football. Micheal o Mordha and Shane Mc Quaid both had an excellent game in the centre of defence.
Karl Mooney and Raymond Sherry along with Ryan Lee lead the Monaghan attack and caused Glenmuir a lot of problems. Stephen Rooney in goals pulled off some very fine saves during the game. Mickey and Brendan Mc Quaid both played very well on the wing and Mickey was very unlucky to be called offside in the last minute when he broke through from midfield with only the keeper to beat to level the scores.
David Mullen and Adrian Prunty, along with all the rest of the squad played very well on the day. There is a lot of good things to come from this team and all the players know what they have to do starting next week as they chase 3 points at home to St Domnicks.

UNITED UNDER 14’S OPEN WITH COMPREHENSIVE WIN
Monaghan United’s U14’s got their season off to a flying start with an emphatic 9-0 victory over Walshestown on Sunday last. United relished the occasion of playing on the main pitch at Kingspan Century Park and returned a commanding performance to the delight of the home supporters. In truth, the home team were too strong for Walshestown, who fought bravely throughout the game. Monaghan were assured in their passing early on and the defensive four comprising of new signings Darren McMahon and Niall Askin and last year’s stalwarts Niall Greenan and Cian Byrne, coped easily with the Walshestown attack. Shane Larkin put United ahead on the 8th minute after a cross from James Clarke.
James himself scored in the 9th minute after some good defensive play and a perfect pass from Darren McMahon. James scored a hatrick by half time with goals on the 17th and 18th minutes. Not to be outdone, Colin Clerkin, his striking partner, scored a brace before half time and with Niall Greenan scoring in the 32nd minute the contest was over by half time with a 7-0 scoreline.
United reorganised and restructured in the 2nd half using all their substitutions. New signings Gavin Farreelly and Colm Flynn caught the eye and didn’t look out of place among the “old boys”. Elliot Maguire made it 8-0 in the 25th minute and Niall “Larsson” Greenan completed the job with a well taken goal on the stroke of full time. All in all it was a very encouraging start to the season and United look forward to the next game against Seatown on Sunday.
