MONS TRAVEL TO TOLKA
Monaghan United travel to Tolka Park this Friday night on the back of their outstanding 2-0 win over Dundalk. United will be buoyed up by this victory and very much up for the challenge of playing last year’s Premier Division champions. Shelbourne have strengthened their squad somewhat during the July transfer window and have been getting the kind of results you would expect from a club with such an illustrious recent history. They too beat Dundalk recently in a 1-0 victory at Tolka Park and were before that beaten 1-0 by Finn Harps, so have been on a similar run to United of late.
The chink in their armour however is that they suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Mons the last time the faced off at Kingspan Century Park and will undoubtedly view United as force to be reckoned with. This in turn may be to their advantage as they will be doubly determined not to let United shame them in their home, and together with signings such as Anto Flood (Dundalk) and Sean L’estrange (Kildare County), Shelbourne are offering their fans a more hopeful vision of the future.
Returning to Kingspan Century Park for the first time since he was released by United in 2005 will be Ciaran Quinn. Quinn was an exceptionally talented young player when he was at the Mons but was never consistent enough to gain the full approval of the fans.
This is going to be an exciting fixture and if United can pull off a win, it will see them leapfrog Shelbourne in the table. A draw will keep United within touching distance of the Dubliners as they slowly progress up the table.

Thank you also to the Club Doctor and the St. John’s Ambulance crew who helped tend to the injured players during the game and helped ensure the safety of both teams.

UNDER 16’S HEAD TO THE UMBRO CUPMonaghan United’s Under 16’s under the management of Kieran McMahon and Eamon Reilly make the trek west this week to take part in the Umbro Cup in Galway. Kieran’s side will participate in the U17’s category, taking a step up, in the tournament which runs from Tuesday 7th until Saturday11th August.
This tournament is made up of teams from the USA, Canada and the UK together with representative teams from Galway, Wexford, Roscommon and the FAI South East Development Squad. Galway team Salthill Devon’s and Derry City will also participate.
United take on tournament favourites Salthill Devon’s in the first game on Wednesday and this will be a very difficult game for the Monaghan lads. Kieran is determined however that his young team will give it their best and enjoy the experience while they are there.
United’s squad is made up of some of Kieran’s regulars from last season and some guests in the shape of Declan Burns, Kevin Morris, Donal Tierney and David Kerr.
