LIMERICK 37 COME OUT ON TOP
Monaghan United were unable to keep Limerick 37 out of the points when the Munster men came to Kingspan Century Park last Friday night in the FAI eircom League of Ireland First Division. Limerick are sitting pretty in 3rd place in the league just 7 points adrift of leaders Dundalk and with the return of ex-Limerick FC players Robbie Kelleher and Tommy Barrett, Paul McGee has enhanced his squad for their onslaught on Cobh and Dundalk.
Mick Cooke will have been disappointed with the result as United had held their own in the first half until they lost striker Willie Doyle to a knee injury. Doyle had just of late been finding his form and it was gut-wrenching to see his season stall once more as he was carried off by stretcher.
McGee’s Limerick had the stronger fire power and in the 2nd half they put it to use with Pat Purcell scoring from a corner on the 52nd minute. United only started to find their feet again in the last ten minutes or so but it was too little too late.

WEXFORD YOUTHS RETURN TO KCP
Monaghan United play Wexford Youths at Kingspan Century Park this Friday night in the FAI eircom League of Ireland First Division with an 8pm kick off. Wexford provided Monaghan with their first opposition of the season when United hosted them on the 9th March in their first ever FAI eircom League of Ireland match. United looked like they had the game sown up when they went 2 goals ahead but a feisty Youth’s team were determined to make the best of their debut and managed to take their first point when they clawed back the 2 goals.
When United travelled to Wexford in May, Mick Cooke’s men returned victorious having beaten the Youths in a 3-2 thriller. Youths currently sit one point ahead of Monaghan in the league and this will be a battle royale as the 2 Mick’s come head to head to try and move up the table.
This may well be a game that separates the men from the boys.

UNITED SNAP UP EX DROG IN TRANSFER WINDOW
Monaghan United have signed experienced midfielder Don Tierney in the transfer window. Tierney who has Drogheda United and Finn Harps among his former clubs, made his United debut against Limerick 37 on Friday night with a start but was replaced by fellow new signing Darren O’Connor in the 89th minute.
On the flip side of the coin, United have released young local lad Finbar Heffernan. Heffernan has returned to his old club, Dungannon Swifts and will be part of their squad heading to Lithuania for the opening stages of the UEFA Cup competition.
CONNOLLY PRESEASON TRAINING WITH WOLVES
Monaghan United Under 15 player Mark Connolly from Clones is presently training with Coca Cola Football League Championship team Wolverhampton Wanderers. Connolly has travelled over to Wolves previously and is really enjoying his time with the club. He will be travelling back for the Foyle Cup in Derry where he will be playing on the Irish Development Squad team. After the Foyle Cup he returns to Wolves until mid-August.
WOMEN’S TEAM GET A BY IN THE LEAGUE
Monaghan United Women’s team have been handed 3 league points following their last opponents pulling out of their fixture. United were due to play Grove Rangers on Monday night but the Drogheda team were unable to field a team due to holidays and injuries and United were awarded the points.
Monaghan travel to Wayside Celtic next Monday night in the last 16 of the FAI Junior Cup. United are running a bus to the game for any supporters interested in travelling. SUMMER CAMP A ROARING SUCCESS
Monaghan United FC’s Summer Fun Soccer Camp went down a storm, almost literally, with approximately 100 kids enjoying a week of football and fun. Despite the almost winter conditions, the children had still had a ball. Monaghan United FC would like to thank everyone who helped out at the camp and especially the children and parents who attended.
AUTISM LIFE CYCLE VISITS KCP
Monaghan United FC were proud to host some remarkable young men at our game against Limerick 37 on Friday night when Gerard Tiernan, John Tiernan and former Athlone Town Footballer Tommy Hewitt visited as part of their bicycle tour of all 21 FAI eircom League of Ireland football stadiums. The lads had started in the Brandywell in Derry and finished in Athone on Saturday last having visited all 21 grounds in 8 days and having rode 954 miles in the process in aid of Autism Ireland.
United were delighted when Team Sponsors The Squealing Pig Ltd provided the cyclists and their entourage with a meal prior to their visit to Kingspan Century Park and we would like to thank manager Martin Kelly and proprietor Raymond Aughey for all their help in this worthy cause.
Raymond Aughey was then on hand at half time during the game to present the cyclists with a signed Monaghan United jersey which will join the other 22 jerseys collected along the way in a massive auction to be held at a later date also in aid of the Autism charity.
Thank you very much to all the fans who contributed to the bucket collection at half time and congratulations to Gerard, John and Tommy on their phenomenal achievement.
