Wimbledon 2007

Thought I started a thread on this already...

Anyway it started today with rain. When it finally stopped Federer made light work of his opponent. Hingis survived a scare when she faced 2 match points, but her opponent bottled it, lost the set and the final set 6-0.

Henman got off to a great start against Moya, looked very comfortable in the first set, then it started raining again. Moya came back out a different player when it stopped, raced through the second 6-1 and won the third 7-5. Henman came back in the fourth, winning 6-2. Moya again looked on top in the final set and went a break up early on. Henman looked out when he faced 2 break points at 4-2, but he faught out of it, broke Moya in the next game and then held his serve. Henman had 4 match points but Moya held on and saved the match. Bad light stopped play at 5-5 in the fifth.

I thought Henman would have won if play had gone on. He had all the momentum and the crowd was right behind him, the great support really lifted him. If he gets through this I'm sure he'll get to the second week. He's a good chance of making the quarters, only match that would be difficult for him is Gasquet IMO. Still can't see anything other than a Federer-Nadal final, although Djokovic has a chance against Nadal.

Henman match was a cracker, it was slower today, but some great shots by both Moya and Henman. Rooting for Timbo to finally win it this year

when's Sharapova on? :)

Superb game. Sad to think Moya'll get paid the same amount as some women's entrant who crumbles 6-0 6-1.

Henman will probably lose the next round now. Faces Feliciano Lopez, another Spaniard who presumably favours clay. Probably Lapentti in round three, again unseeded.

It was a classic match, it will take some game to better that in this year's tournament. Both players were magnificent, neither player's play deserved a first round exit.

I think Henman will only make it to the quarters, maybe semis. He'll have to beat Roddick to do so.

My comment was more to do with Henman's recent form and losing to unknown players on grass lately than Lopez, whom I've never heard of.

I did avoid them.

Henman was class yesterday and today. That's enough proof that he's back on form. He's still not back to his best yet, come the second week he will. Saying that Lopez will win because you've never heard of him is ridiculous.

You're still missing my point. On both counts.

Your point was that he was in poor form- he isn't.

You've backed Lopez to win when you've never heard of him so obviously haven't seen him play. Doesn't make sense to me.

Two wins all year (outside the Davis Cup) is good form?

Losing on grass to a player ranked 110 is good form?

I haven't backed Lopez to win. I've "backed" Henman to lose (in fact, I'm merely invoking Sod's Law. "Didn't he do well? He'll probably mess up now that everyone thinks he's back" kind of way.)

Both those wins have come in the last week. So yes his recent form is good.

Using the same logic beating a player ranked 22 is good form, so your logic is flawed. Regardless Cilic is only a 18 and hasn't played enough tournaments to get a higher ranking, similar to Andy Murray last year. No way is he the 110th best player in the world.

No they haven't. One win last week, one win in February. (I wasn't counting Moya).

If you want me to give you further poor results, he also lost to players ranked 96, 73, 55, 40 and 84. Only people he's beaten (pre Moya) were ranked 69, 78 and, in the Davis Cup, 141 and 293. That's now form, as opposed to isolated results. And in fact, one of those defeats was to - Feliciano Lopez! Lost on hard court in three sets in February.

He's 141 in the ATP race, a competition which measures current year form.

Not good form.

In any event, you still haven't grasped the context of the original post though. And I've pointed that context out to you numerous times at this stage. Please take a moment to take in the context before your next post.

You can't just pretend the Moya match didn't happen. It's happened so has to count towards measuring recent form.

How many of those defeats have been recent?

141 after being injured for most of the season. That means nothing.

I have and that's what makes your original point way off the mark.

From your posts you seem to be just looking up stats as the thread has gone on rather than have followed the tennis season. Stats never tell the full story, especially when a player has being injured.

Yes it adds to his form and represents a boost but on the whole this season his form has been terrible and he's tended to immediately follow up what few good performances he's had with dire ones.

That is pineapple's point, that he can't string to decent performances back to back.

Also one win does not mean a return to form, you should bloody know that. If he put a couple of wins together we could say it was a significant upturn.

When Aberdonian Stu and me are in agreement, you know we've got to be right! :p
